Maceo Baston is Now a College Basketball Coach in Michigan
It turns out that Juwan Howard isn't the only former U-M player coaching college basketball in Michigan.
I just saw that Maceo Baston - one of my all-time favorites - is in his first season as an assistant at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Wolverines (yes, they also call themselves the Wolverines) are 6-2. Maceo's Wolverines have played a crap-ton more games than Juwan's Wolverines have.
It has to be pretty cool for the UM-D kids to be coached by someone with Maceo's experience (four seasons in the NBA, a lot more overseas). Not sure where his coaching career will take him, but I'll be rooting for all the Wolverines this winter.

I thought U of M Dearborn called themselves the Wolves.

I did, too, but according to stories LIKE THIS on their website, they're calling themselves the Wolverines.

It's cool that they get the Jordan brand clothing as well. Their shorts are pretty sweet.

Is that a throwback design? I swear I've seen that diamond pattern before. 70s-80s?

I had no idea UM-Dearborn had sports teams.

They were all club teams.

Wonder how much an assistant coach at that level gets paid? Enough for it to be their only job?
I imagine so but no way it's 6 figures as an assistant. I'm sure he's not doing it for the money but more for the experience and to build up his resume.

UM-Dearborn is in the NAIA.
The head coach who won the NAIA championship in 2018 (after being runner up in 2017) got hired away by another NAIA school. He makes $85K.

No, it is not enough for most AC's to have it be their only job.

I assume they're having one of the other assistants teach the players how to rebound?

It looks like Maceo spent last season as an assistant at Schoolcraft College. The head coach resigned mid-season, but Maceo stayed on staff. Schoolcraft played in the community college division, while UM-Dearborn is NAIA (and they play some Division 1 schools), so it's a small step up.
I'm guessing he gets paid next to nothing, so he's probably doing this to build up the resume and see if coaching is something he likes and is good at.

Good for him; I liked watching him in college.

This is pretty cool...I was a big Baston fan. He was an underrated player at Michigan.

This dude was so athletic. I admit I was truly a tad too young to be into the Fab5 but this next batch of players is when I delved into college basketball as a big fan (probably 10-11 years old) and Maceo was one of the players that helped draw me to Michigan basketball. His name is also uniquely awesome.

You’re probably also too young to know about Maceo Parker, but he was James Brown’s primary soloist on alto and tenor sax, and was a major part of Parliament-Funkadelic. He’s probably the most famous of his name.
