With every huge win/title that our athletic programs get without the accompanying muppets post, I get just that much angrier that muppets were wasted on the men's basketball team beating Rutgers in a meaningless game.

That game was fun to watch and winning in sudden death OT was spectacular. One question, though: Given how much contact is allowed, what’s the rule that keeps teams from running pick plays?

Picks are legal for sure. Like in hoops they can’t be moving, etc

In Lax, however, picks are much less effective against “long sticks” (D and Midfielders) because the extra stick length allow the defender extra length to cover their man (for example going under the screen and/or switching or sliding)

So pleased—and with a slight feeling of kinship.

I've told part of this story before, a bloodied face and speeding down the mountain to the nearest  ER (with the first 2 doctors called declining to come, because near midnight by then, they assumed I was drunk). Here's the earlier lacrosse part:

At a party once on a meadow by a mountain cabin in Oregon, I was learning to play catch with a guy  on our fire crew from Maine who'd played lacrosse. When it got too dark to see the ball, he said he'd teach me face-offs.

What he meant, I soon learned, was that he intended to teach me sneaky and illegal face-off moves. For instance, he stepped on my stick, trapping my hands under it. The next time, he simply knocked me over. He kept winning the ball and laughing.

So finally I came up swinging but he won that contest too, hitting me over the eye. We decided to stop then and went to sit on the porch in the dark. Later, going inside, I could tell by shocked looks that something was wrong.

Nothing big: blood from the wound had bled into my beard, making it look as if the side of my face was smashed. But after that wild ride and doctor #3, a handful of stitches and I was good to go when we got called on a fire the next day.

OT: The winged-helmeted Delaware Blue Hens, winners of the play-in game, have an 8-5 lead over top-seeded Duke at the half. Michigan plays the winner.

Maybe it's just as well, because I'd have a hard time rooting against Delaware, due to their long-time football coach Tubby Raymond. A native of Flint and a graduate of Flint Northern H.S. (like me), Tubby played football at UM and captained the baseball team in 1949. After a couple years of minor-league baseball, he began his long-time coaching career at Maine, moved to UD in 1954, and stayed 36 years.

That + the winged helmets = how could I root against UD?

Plus, any chance to root against the place that spawned that prick Laettner is fine by me.

There were times when I barely played for Flint Northern. (A .240 batting average over two seasons of varsity baseball didn't put me on anybody's honor roll.)

What did you play, and for whom did you play it? And what did you teach at my alma mater?
