Live coverage from Jourdan Lewis trial

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa 68 on

Dallasnew.com sports day reporter Mike Persak is in the courtroom tweeting live updates from the trial.  I've been following it periodically.

Of note, the girlfriend appeared to get mad when Jourdan's attorney pointed out that she had changed her story multiple times.

The girlfriend's mother gave testimony that seemed to back up Jourdan's version of some of the events.

The police recall pillows being "thrown" not used as weapons or "mushing" her against the wall, as she now claims, and there being no physical marks on her.

Ann Arbor police are currently testifying.

It sounds like she is a bit crazy. She had already claimed some crazy stuff about him, the lesson here is that when your spouse / partner exhibits signs of instability and craziness - you need to run not walk away. I had a situation where I was too nice to an ex-girlfriend that was getting crazy and possessive. By the time I finally broke it off she started stalking me. I half-kid when I say that I had to move out of the country to get away.

That this was even prosecuted if there were "no physical marks on her." Our justice system is really f'd up. I have no idea whether he is guilty of wrongdoing but it is grossly unjust to prosecute somebody with no objective evidence of even a crime let alone guilt. Even if he's declared not guilty, he has lost time and money and suffered extreme stress. I suspect it happens all the time though.

I used to be a prosecutor.  In my jurisdiction, cops HAD to make an arrest whenever they were called out to a DV situation.  And our office rarely let us drop DV cases, even if the evidence sucked.  It's all politics.

And further to that, Washtenaw County is notoriously aggressive when it comes to prosecuting DV cases.  Furthermore, there is nowhere near a political cost to going after a football player in Washtenaw County - if anything, it shows you're not in UofM's pocket.

All of which, BTW, I think is a good thing.  Except when a pillow fight becomes a DV case.  We'll watch the facts come out, but if this really is just about a pillow fight, the Prosecutor's Office should have dropped this one.

Probable cause for an arrest is a lower evidentiary standard than what is known as a preponderance of the evidence (a likelihood greater than fifty percent). So it's understandable that these "he said, she said" crimes result in warrants issuing often. If the standard were changed to needing a preponderance of the evidence for a domestic violence arrest to be made, then this wouldn't be such a problem.

This whole thing is so weird.  I remember the articles before last season about how she was the reason that he came back and got his degree, and now they are going through this.  When it's he said she said it's very hard to pass judgement and also weird that a prosecutor took this to trial with what sounds like weak evidence.

It is interesting to follow this case, but it makes me dislike many in my gender.

It should be wrapped up today.  Putting this behind him is going to be a huge relief.

She was with JD for years and testifies that he was looking to spend his money on his (estranged family)  The argument started over him falling asleep with the lights on. (wasting her money?)

Ummmmm.  Money? JD likely lost money and time trying to fix this mess and so did you. You won't be getting any of JD's money, Miss. Game over.

Assuming he is found not guilty, can someone please make that Jourdan shirt with the image from his Wisconsin interception?

I sat in the family section for the Penn State game last year and remember seeing her wearing a "Michigan Girlfriend" shirt (like Michigan Football, Michigan Law....).  Thought it was a little strange at the time.  Hopefully justice (whatever that is) prevails.

Reading the tweets I'm not optimistic.  DV is a charge that is heavily tilted against a man, especially in the state of Michigan.  I've known men who were charged and convicted for defending themselves from a woman who wouldn't stop hitting and kicking and biting and scratching the guy.

From reading this and the other posts I'm pretty skeptical and on a jury would not find him guilty, but I don't feel confident that many people will feel the same way outside the Michigan community.  Hope I'm wrong

Reading the tweets / prosecutor's closing argument and cannot see why they were so adamant to initially file charges against lewis -- prosecutor's own words admitting that there was no true injury, only "assault & battery" via pillow under the legal definition.  Just seems like a pretty miniscule incident to focus on.

How frustrating it must be for Lewis to sit there and hear the prosecutor accuse him of repeatedly assaulting her to the jury. That would be very hard to listen to without making a peep.

And then to try to tack on a fleeing charge when he was trying to get out of there? Kiss my ass.

Such BULLSHIT

So she tried to start a fight because she knew if he hit her it would ruin him. He swung a PILLOW at her 3 times and when he didnt attack her she calls the police.

You can tell this is a classic case of angry girlfriend trying to get boyfriend in trouble by playing the battered gf
