Lengthy profile on George Karlaftis--Class '19 recruit

Submitted by Blue Balls Afire on

What an interesting backstory--one of the more unique I've come across in recruiting.  The kid has hardly played any football and has scholarship offers from the likes of MI, Alabama, and Miami (YTM).  LINK: http://www.jconline.com/story/sports/high-school/2017/08/10/once-told-he-sucks-football-division-prospect-has-long-list-suitors/543568001/

"Prior to his junior year, he’s already limited his list of suitors to three: Michigan, Miami (Florida) and Purdue." A unique top three for sure.

That was a great article.  I am now a George K. fan.  I would love to see him in the maize and blue but good luck to him where ever he chooses to go!

I generally am a "trust the coaches" guy, so I admit some level of ambivalence upon learning GK had UM in his top 3. I am no longer ambivalent. What an amazing story. I now view this guy as a must-get but will root for him wherever he ends up.

I just finished reading that story and....wow. I don't know that we've seen a backstory like that and we may never again. Fascinating and sad and to read about how he has overcome things to get to this point - and he isn't even on a college campus yet - had me ignoring my kids and dogs because I didn't want to quit reading.

It would be interesting to see that story write a chapter in Ann Arbor. I would agree with others.

Everyone's backstory is different, so in that regard, you'll never see the same story twice. Having said that, some of the refugees (Chesson, Darboh, obviously) have incredible back stories and more than their fair share of hardships. We often fail to understand how privileged we are.

Holy cow, I hope we get this kid in the Maize and Blue. But I hope he succeeds where ever he goes. I imagine Mattison looking at this kid the way a sculptor sees a piece of raw clay. Time to create a masterpiece!

I would like for Michigan to get this kid. I bet many of us left that article wondering how strongly does his mother really feel about him going to Purdue because that could be the deciding factor.

Thanks for posting. Great article. Not sure how likely he is to end at Michigan, but the 2019 class could be extremely special. I had 0 knowledge of this kid until reading this, but I would be thrilled to have him join the class.
