Lee Corso V. RichRod

Submitted by AZBlue on

I caught "Coach" Corso on with the Mad Dog on Sirius this afternoon.

When the topic came to the UM / ND game he referred to Michigan as a "really bad team" and credited "poor coaching" on RichRod and staff for the fumbles. (the fumbles!!!!)

This go me to wondering if Coach Rodriguez had:

  • Slept with Corso's wife
  • Not Covered a spread at WVU that cost Lee a bundle
  • Always picked him last for kickball in school
  • Called Corso a "Wind-bag, no-talent ex-coach" - (Instead of just thinking it like everyone else......)
  • Re-activated the nightmares of his UM drubbings back in the day...

Or something along those lines...

Unfortunately, I am sure the true reason is that Mr. Corso is as lazy as most of the talking heads at ESPN.

If I had only seen the highlights on ESPN (something like fumble, fumble, ND bomb to Tate, and fumble returned for TD) I would have thought we totally sucked (aside from suckiness of the turnovers) also.  But I don't get paid to "analyze" college teams.

If anyone knows a true source(s) of Corso's grudge - or some really good alternative theories - I would love to hear them.

--PS -- Was it just me or did the replay show the ND player speed up and lower his shoulder before taking out Weis??  I'm just saying that maybe the ND Alumni have spies ala the WLA.

I didn't hear Corso's comments, but I'd like to know the context.  However, it wouldn't surprise me if he made those comments.  On Gameday he's more of a color commentator than an analyst (Herbstreit) and some his attempts at analysis are comedy.  Herbstreit will occasionally give him on of those "are you serious?" looks when he explains his rationale.

If it wasn't for Corso's schtick (NSFMF and donning the mascot's head when he makes the closing picks) I think ESPN might have dumped him years ago.

Herbie called us a very bad team as well, guessing that we may only win 4 games.  He then said we may win 8 because the Big Ten is so soft this year.

They probably only see the highlights of the games not involving the top teams.  And our highlight reel was probably all fumbles.

Following ESPN Corporate Doctrine they were probably barred from watching/speaking about anything not related the the one biggest story of the day.  This week any employee time not dedicated to OSU/USC was required to be limited to no more than 5 minutes.

I suspect  Corso was just calling it from the surface, and doesn't have some sort of personal vendetta against Rich as was supposed in this thread.  Keep in mind back in '05 West Virginia was his pick for the national title and he rode it for as long as he can.  I think Corso's just reacting like the rest of the world and not a fully informed expert on the sport.

Herbstreit, on the other hand...  Let me just say that back in the old days, when he first came onto the scene in the mid-90's, Kirk was a youthful, exuberant, and energetic presence whose main asset to the program was his on-field perspective.  NOW he's the most overwhelming EGO I may have ever seen behind a sports desk, and it truly AMAZES me that ESPN hasn't stepped in to handcuff his extreme-degree-to-the-point-of-rectal-bleeding Buckeye Partisanship!!!  He has crossed the line so many times he's miles away from ever stepping back!  From all of the media sway he's crafted in the poles, to all of the Tressel love he's pumped from his chair on the right side, to his miraculous ability to TALK ABOUT NOTHING BUT THE GREATNESS OF OSU and TRESSEL EVEN WHEN THEY'RE GETTING BLOWN OUT LIKE SATURDAY NIGHT, even-- and I'll go ahead and say it-- his blatant tampering with the Les Miles hire back in December, clearly...

Kirk Herbstreit abuses his position as a media figure for 'the glory of the DAMN BUCKEYES.  Why on earth is he even calling ALL of those games?  Think of Saturday night.  Think of the LSU title game last year.  Think of ALL of our OSU games since '06.  Herbstreit just waits for appropriate moments to rattle off his quasi-scripted sermons on Laurenitis, on Troy Smith's reads, on Beanie Well's power, on Hawk's tackling, on Hartline's hands.  Blah. Blah. Blah.  Pull him out and call the game.

Hell, even Pam Ward can do that.  Well, I may be stretching there, but you get the idea.

Six -- Let me preface my remarks by saying I did not watch the OSU-USC game, so I missed any comments he made in that game.

My take on Herbstreit is that he has been extremely pro-Big Ten.  Its hard to say if he is even more pro-OSU given that his time as the prime time game analyst has coincided with OSU owning the Big Ten and playing in at least 3 consecutive BCS games.

I don't think that he was malicious in calling the Les Miles to Michigan report.  I think everyone thought that, he just f-ed up by not doing adequate fact checking.  The inexcusable part is that an on-air personality, who is less likely to have the network of contacts to verify such a story, was the one doing the reporting.  This was his, and ESPN's, error in judgement.

I will also give him the benefit of the doubt about our game.  I doubt he had much time to analyze the M-ND game given tht he was doing game day, having to comment on the full slate of day games, and prepping for the OSU-USC game. He likely saw a highlight package full of fumbles and then gave what little insight he had given limited data.  And as much as it pains me, our game was very much back burner.  If not for the helmets and fight songs, its unlikely a tv crew shows up to televise it.

It seems that ESPN is making him their front man for college football.  Regardless of what we think of him, we are going to be seeing a lot of him.

A team that fumbles 6 times, and has 6 total turnovers would be accurately described as a "really bad team.

There are a lot of qualifiers here.  As stated earlier, the game was played in a "fucking monsoon."  Michigan fell behind in a huge way early, and thus were behind the eight ball and were pressing a little bit.   This leads to more turnovers (and not the fruity kind out of the oven that I love so much).

What if RR decided to kick off (radical I know, but givien the field conditions, being away, the relative strength of the team, and youthful M offense, I actually thought of this when the Irish won the toss and decided to defer) to open the game, and ND in turn turns the ball over like Michigan did.  The game, given the youthful nervousness, etc., has a totally different compexion.  A few turnovers early totally changed the game.  It could have gone the other way.

Yeah, I know, coulda, woulda, shoulda.  But that is what we are discussing here, isn't it?

Bottom line, I do not think this is a really bad team and this belief will be vindicated by the end of the season.

By the way, aren't you part of some kind of revolution or something?????

As bad as Herbstreit is, I think that Holtz has to be the biggest homer of all the football commentators in college and the pros. Aren't they supposed to at least come off as unbiased? Holtz is a crazy old man and a disgrace to all football commentators. Am I the only one who hates Lou Holtz or am I just as crazy as he is for thinking he sucks?

Got news for ya, a coach is responsible to some degree for a team that had 6 turnovers and 7 fumbles in total, no matter how much you love Rich Rod and Co. Also, Herbstreit is one of the best college football analysts around. He is NOT an OSU shill no matter how much you imagine him to be. In fact, he's been overly critical of OSU to the point of alienating many in the OSU fanbase just so not to appear as a homer. I have a feeling that unless every analyst gets on camera and gives handjobs to Michigan and Rich Rod that some of you will believe that they have an anti UM bias. Quit embarrassing yourselves.

They embarrass themselves in every major game, and are sketchy in many of the others.  There's as much to criticize there as anywhere.

And I'll bet Herbstreit has had some work done over the off-season -- he was looking really fake.  Or maybe HD is not kind to him?

I didn't think Herbstriet was over-the-top pro-OSU during the SC game at all.  In fact, he basically disowned them by the end of the game saying it had become men vs. boys.

The bias of Herbie exists only in paranoid Michigan fans heads.

And do you really think he had anything to do with the Miles thing? You really haven't caught on that people behind the scenes at ESPN find this news, and then they have one of the talking heads read it through a teleprompter so it looks like they "broke" it? You think  Herbstreit is out doing that reporting? Christ almighty.

Six Zero

September 15th, 2008 at 4:32 PM ^

First of all, it was Herbstreit's call to break the story the morning of the SEC game-- confirmed over the winter. And secondly, if you go back supposedly it was HIS citing an unidentified source within the UM program, AND he may have had the information earlier that week. Now say what you want about the whole thing, or me or whatever, but don't you at least agree that the whole timeliness of the report was a bit suspect?

mjv

September 15th, 2008 at 5:16 PM ^

Timeliness was not the issue.  If a reporter gets a story, they want to break it ASAP before anyone else can. And that was one of the biggest off the field stories going at that point.

I do agree that ESPN did everything to imply the Herbie had the contact with the source.  The scroll on the screen indicated that Herbstreit was the one with the lead.   ESPN usually cites the reporter who gets the lead on stories like that, such as Len Pasq. or Pat Forde if they come across something.

"The Big Ten is a joke, and Ohio State is the poster child."

According to The Realests this is what Herbie said after the USC game.

There is no way that anyone is going to be pimping the Bucks after this game.  If OSU went 11-1 and won every game by 50+ they still would get no media love.

Ever since the Herbie messed up on the coaching situation he has taken a different edge towards Michigan.  He was always a bit partial but fair but now....

after each game this year he talked about how dissapointed he has been in Michigan, yet he picked them to win 4-6 games this year, to me he just wants to get Michigan this year and RR out there so people notice how bad it is this year.  Why, dont know, maybe it was the Miles deal, maybe its his friendship with Desmond, dont really know.

Corse has lost it, obviously none of those guys saw the real game saturday or they would be talking about ND alot more.  ND sucks, I can say that with a straight face because there are actually people out there that think they are back.

gmblue - they talk about Michigan on every program because Michigan has one of the largest fanbases in the entire country.

And guess what? Michigan HAS been a bad team - we sucked against Utah, but made it close through Utah screwing itself. We scraped by Miami. WE TURNED THE BALL OVER 6 TIMES.

4-6 wins seems like a pretty fucking reasonable prediction.

You're calling him biased because he's speaking the truth, and you don't want to hear it.

Look, I support Rodriguez like crazy - I think he's the right coach, and I think Michigan will be better for having him in the long-term. BUT, we're not a good football team this year, and if an analyst points that out, it's not bias.

I don't know how Corso feels toward RichRod, but I do think he dislikes Michigan.  He went 0-8 against us at Indiana and has never gotten over the 1979 game (the AC miracle TD).  He brings up that game on a regular basis.

Blue Durham - I agree with all that. I'm merely pointing out that a perfectly reasonable, unbiased analyst could look at our team right now, and conclude that we will win 4 to 6 games, and that we're not that good.
