Kwity Paye getting some noise in the first round

Haven't seen this posted yet, but PFF released their first 2021 1st round Mock Draft, and Kwity comes off the board at 16 to the Browns. Caveats apply to the draft order and how early this is (Lions at 13, have they watched them this year?), but I find it interesting that they have him so high. No other Michigan player appears in the mock

I’d say more because he isn’t an edge pass rushing DE terror and he isn’t a penetrating DT type, which are typically the types of DL players going in the first round.

He is an excellent player and very fundamentally sound, but his body of work doesn’t currently look like a first rounder.

Being completely objective, that feels way too high. He never really popped off the screen as a 1st rd type player, to me.

Obviously, would love to be proved this year.

Hmm... I know you didn’t raise the point, but I don’t see why any of them would clearly be seen as better players than Paye. Hutchinson and Paye are similar level players. McGrone has had a few excellent games, and some mediocre ones. Certainly not Ross, Kemp Hawkins or Hill.

Didn't the Jets just waste a 1st round pick on a QB?  They ruin QBs more than the Lions, and that's saying something.

The Lions are horrible but they'll figure out how to ruin it and end up in 1st round no-mans-land of picking somewhere 8-16.

Hopefully Paye plays like a first rounder this year; the defense would be immensely better with a strong pass rush and I think him and Hutchinson can provide that.

I will say, I don't know if Washington (apparently picking #3) would want to take a chance on Fields to replace Haskins, even though PFF claims Fields "vastly outperformed" Haskins running this offense in college.  Fields is a better runner but there's a reason no Meyer QB has turned into a legitimate NFL QB since Alex Smith, and even that took a couple of years and a healthy dose of Jim Harbaugh (and others) to get it out of him.  The offense is terrifying with elite talent but I think it also covers up guys with limited field vision and defense recognition, and Fields strikes me as just another guy in that line.

Here's a comprehensive database of NFL mock drafts from across the internet. Doubt the link will work from my phone, but...

There are quite a few with Paye in the first if you scroll through.

As someone who has been following the draft pretty closely for over 20 years, most of these projections at this time of year aren't worth the paper they are printed on.  They basically take returning starters from big time programs and project them to have big years to move them up in the draft.  Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.  A year ago people were talking about Fromme being a top 10 pick and I remember seeing Khaleke Hudson as a late 1st/2nd round type.  It's all just to get clicks and generate conversation.  This is why I wasn't buying the Mayfield draft hype and think he will benefit greatly from coming back and possibly play himself into a 1st/2nd round selection.

That said, better to get the hype and be on teams radar than the alternative.  My concerns regarding Kwitty being drafted revolve around his less than ideal height and while he has certainly been good, he hasn't flashed elite pass rushing skills(or at leas potential) which is what most teams want out of a DE that high in the draft.

Dear god, no. Please do not send Kwity to the Browns. The man deserves to have a fair chance at getting his career started off the right way.

In either case, I'm really happy for the kid. If he makes the first round after coming from complete recruiting obscurity, that'll be one hell of a success story for him. I hope he has a monster year this season.

This mock draft is all wrong.  I heard Justin Fields is alleging that he experienced racism with the Washington Football Team so he will fall from the 3rd pick to the 23rd pick and land with Belichick's New England.

Given his and his family's story, it would be incredible if he were able to get a Michigan degree and 1st round NFL money.
