Kofi Cockburn Suspended Three Games (NCAA is Dumb)
Let's briefly unify to talk about how the NCAA is dumb and look ahead to basketball season which makes us all much happier.
The NCAA suspended Kofi Cockburn for 3 games for basically jumping the gun on NIL by a couple weeks. Which is dumb of him but especially dumb of them. First two games are tune ups, third is at Marquette though, and they might miss him there.

I guess I'll play devil's advocate. Cockburn wasn't trying to be malicious, but he was clearly NOT as diligent as possible about following the rules.
A lack of diligence in this regard should be addressed. I don't disagree w/ the NCAA here.

Agreed…. If we say the NCAA is dumb, at how many weeks early would we say a punishment becomes not dumb? 3, 4, 5, 30? Like it or not, there has to be a black and white timeframe for rules like this

Any point after the courts smack you down for preventing this it's time to just not enforce the dumb rule that got your ass handed to you by SCOTUS, even if technically speaking it's still a rule until July 1.

I disagree. If you'll pardon my admittedly heavy handed analogy, this is a little like prosecuting a newly-freed slave for attempting to escape the day before emancipation. The "no profiting from your name and likeness — only WE can do that" rule was unjust and shitty to begin with, we've finally seen that and dropped it, WHY DO we need a black and white timeframe for enforcing it?

There are literally hundreds of analogies you could have made but you went with slavery. Well done! Second half of user name checks out.

Mass exploitation of — and enrichment on the backs of — these kids’ physical prowess? It’s not the leap you’re implying.

Extract yourself from that echo chamber you're in and get a clue.

Can we stop with the "mass exploitation". These kids aren't treated badly. They have a wonderful college experience. Should they be compensated for the NIL? Hell yes, but they are in no way being exploited

Nothing warms my heart more when people refer to an 100%, completely voluntary expedition as 'slavery' or 'exploitation'.
November 2nd, 2021 at 9:32 AM ^
How many of us would have traded our actual college careers to be exploited the way those poor souls were before the enlightened NIL era?
Equating free college, free medical care, and free on-the-job training for a career that will make you a millionaire many times over, to literal chains and whips and bondage, is beyond horseshit.

NM I misread. The analogy still is bleh.

Agree. I also think he was trying sell gear given to him/distributed by the school as official team gear. I think that is still not allowed by NIL until you are no longer a student athlete, correct? I could be wrong on this one.
November 2nd, 2021 at 12:21 AM ^
Exactly. What he did remains against the rules today. To suggest that the NIL changed that is wrong. His punishment is three games that will have little baring on the total season.

lol. Fuck the NCAA tho.

Cock. Burn.

One word.....ointment

I am pretty sure what he did is still against NIL rules. He sold school merch, not his own. Right?
Now, if you want to tell me how the NCAA is dumb because Kofi has his suspension already figured out just a short time after the incident while Will Wade is still employed and no penalties have been issued? Okay - I am on board.

The NCAA is dumb because governing bodies are often dumb

NCAA dumb.

I support this only because it a rival

Eh, not to be the "just follow the rules" guy but.. just wait? I get it though, he doesn't have any NBA upside so he's gotta make his now.

3 games is not a big deal even if they do lose to Marquette they have plenty of games to make it up. That’s what’s so great about basketball. You win 7/10 games in February and March and everything you did before doesn’t affect your seeeding by much
November 2nd, 2021 at 8:48 AM ^
salve..... and three games rest.
November 2nd, 2021 at 10:40 AM ^
Its like rules surrounding pot: the rule is dumb and should be revisited, but until then, its a rule.
I doubt Kofi was actively trying to do anything wrong, but its not like he couldn't have easily looked up the rulebook and found out when he could start doing this, or at the very least, found someone who could explain it to him.
I just chalk this up to the category of "it is what it is until someone can change the rule."
