Also Assistant Head Coach, IIRC. He would have been responsible for a lot of the minutea that OSU does so well--no way they're that good for this long without sweating the details. Good luck turning Kent State around...

Seems like a good hire, very sterotypical MAC hire. Seems like he has a lot of expirence. Like all these MAC hires with no previous head coaching expirence it'll come down to how he adjust to being the top guy. Some can, some can't. Also it will be interesting to see if he can recruit to the MAC level. Not sure how much they return overall but Kent St will get the MAC defensive player of year back in DT Roosevelt NIx, who won the award as a true freshmen this year.

This is interesting... Tress is getting up there (just turned 58), I'd guess he has > 5 years left. Hazell was the closest thing he had to a potential successor on staff. I have a feeling OSU will be looking for a coach in the not so distant future.

but Tressel's actually got a lot of coaching tree acorns out there that if tOSU wanted to continue that line, they could pick off a number of coaches who would have HC experience and track records in 3-4 years thart would demonstrate a level of competence for the HC job at tOSU... Dantonio at State (although that's becomng less likely each year... I expect Dantonio to go NFL before he would go to tOSU), Boeckman at Toledo, Fickle's being rumored for the Miami OH job. Even Urban Meyer would be considered a "Tressel coaching tree" hire. Point is, Tressel is building / has built himself a Bo-like program that will likely live on long after he's done coaching tOSU, and tOSU has never had a problem finding successful HC's for their football program since the1940's.

Dantonio is 54 and just had a heart attack. He's not going to be considered for any major job (let alone 5 years from now). If Boeckman is the best you've got then that's not a pretty good coaching tree at all.

That’s good for OSU then. Hazell stays in the recruiting area and gets head coaching experience. If he can make Kent St a contender the OSU job would be smooth transition and they‘re wouldn’t be a huge coaching/coordinator shake up.

One of my “legion of hate” theories, MSU staff has a few OSU nuts in it: M. Dantonio ; D. Tredwell (YSU w/ Tressel); Mike Tressel (Spawn of the Vest). Me and OSU friend of mine have this thought that Dantonio would be the heir to the throne of tOSU, but Hazell is a nice plan too.
