Kelvin Grady to play hoops and football? Effect on schollys?

Submitted by bluebots on
So apparently Kelvin Grady may play hoops and football. (according to the paper that shall not be named) That's all fine and good but I'm guessing that means he's counted against the scholarship max for both sports? If that wasn't the case I'm guessing you'd have a ton of football players also running track or something to wildly increase the number of schollys available to the football team.

That's good! On the other hand I'm kind of surprised that if this is allowed that it isn't abused by some teams. (Just to be clear, I'm not saying this is an abuse in this case, I'm just saying that it seems to be a rule that COULD be abused. Grady clearly can legitimately contribute to both sports)

Why do think thisa big deal. A player only needs to pay for school once, so they dont need 2 scholarship. Every school has athletes that play 2 varsity sports. Its been like this forever. Bo Jackson played baseball and football and was pretty decent at both.

If he plays football he counts for football. Here's the rule. 15.5.9 Multi-Sport Participants. 15.5.9.1 Football. [FBS/FCS] In football, a counter who was recruited and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football. A counter who was not recruited and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football. The article also mentions that he will moving to RB next year for football, for what it's worth. As for basketball, I will be happy to see him back on the court if it comes true. I know he got kind of bashed a lot at umhoops and people here didn't love him, but I think he brings an element that this team is missing and I doubt it will make anything worse. I saw him in the crowd at the Indiana game and he was definitely very into the game.

Looked like an explosive player last year on a few of his catches but just couldn't get on the field later in the season. Mostly because he had trouble catching the ball, but the more athletes this offense has to work with the better.

I'm happy he's coming back to the basketball team. We obviously need some PGs that can contribute more consistently. I never completely understood all the criticism he got. He was a freshman. Sure he had turnovers, but I thought he was a pretty solid player. I guess we will see next season.

As far as guys running track and playing football, I think the rule is that if you play one of the two big moneymaking sports (football or basketball), your scholarship must count against the limit for that sport. Not 100% sure, but I think that's the rule. If a guy plays football and hoops, like Grady, it seems like the school could choose which team gives his scholarship.

I'm not sure on the rules but I know a good number of the miami hurricanes wideouts and corners are on track scholarships...would be nice to extend that to shoelace if possible!

we still do not have a PG and now we can't score; the loss to Wisc was among other factors b/c they have a great scoring PG, MSU has theirs, Minn also, we don't have a good ball handler or a PG, thought this would be fixed by now.

based on privileged information (I guess the mods deleted it for that reason) said he would start practicing Monday and would know by the end of the week if he will stay with the team for the rest of the season. I think maybe Beilein sees him a mentor for Morris.

A small nugget from the annarbor.com article is that he is not likely to play in a game this year because it would burn a year of eligibility. I found that particularly telling that this is probably not just a minor thing and they could see him being a decent part of the team's future if they don't want to waste a year of eligibility on him now. Theoretically he could rejoin the team in early January (assuming the football team starts making bowl games) the next two seasons and be a useful piece of the equation.
