Kellen Russell become's first ever Uof M wrestler to be 4x Big Ten Champion

Submitted by manchild56 on

Kellen Russell has just won his 4th Big Ten Title at 141 Lbs. He now is 28-1 on the year, after going 38-0 last season and winning the NCAA Championship. He was going into this Big Ten Tournament looking to avenge is only loss of the past two season against a freshman from Ohio State, Hunter Stieber but Hunter lost in the semi- finals to Iowa's Montell Marion who Kellen disposed of in the championship 7-2. Well for those who follow wrestling and to those who don't this U of M athlete deserves one hell of a way to go from us fans. Congrats Kellen lets get the NCAA Championship #2

I thought he put in his best match of the year today.  He was taking Marion down whenever he wanted today and Marion is a very good wrestler.  Lets hope he can put that sort of performance in at the NCAAs.

How rare is it to win 4 championships in a row in wrestling in the Big Ten/NCAA? I would imagine that it doesn't happen all that often, but I don't know much about collegiate wrestling.

the best wrestling conference. Like the equivalent of the SEC in football, if not even more dominant. Throughout the B10 season a wrestler is bound to see multiple wrestlers from the top 10 in the country. When you take this into account and that the matches between top teir wrestlers are typically so close this is really amazing. Congrats Kellen!

Congratulations to Kellen Russell. This is an incredible accomplishment - first time in 14 years for a B1G wrestler to win 4 titles. What makes it even more special is that the B1G is by far the best wrestling conference in the NCAA.

7 of the top 15 in the NCAA tournament last year were B1G teams (if you include Nebrask). Michigan was 15th.

4 Big Ten individual Titles for Kellen Russell!!! WOW. Almost unheard-of! He's continuing to build on an OUTSTANDING Michigan career! Anyone know if he plans to wrestle with USA Wrestling after his collegiate career?

sent 73 or 78 individual wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament which was most by a good amount. So being a 4 time champion in the hardest conference in wrestling is a huge acomplishment for K.R. The Big Ten dominates NCAA wrestling and he is one of the top wrestlers in any weight class.

but beating an Iowa wrestler is always good. I respect Iowa, and their style obviously works for them, but they all wrestle the same way and it gets hard to watch. It's fun to watch a guy like Kellen counter that Dan Gable- constantly moving forward-head slapping-push out of bounds-look busy style of wrestling. Congrats Kellen!

My info is dated, but something like the Top 8 finishers in the Big10 make the NCAA tourney with 4-5 wildcards (i.e. Top 9 in 1/2 the weight classes).  In contrast, the ACC's top 2 or 3 make the tourney.

It isn't unusual for the B10 to have 10 guys ranked in the top 10 or even 15.

Hell of an accomplishment.

honored him at the Big House last year. My only complaint was instead of saying his name, they should have just introduced him as BADASS!
