Kam Chatman headed to UDM

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Per multiple outlets, Kam Chatman is headed to UDM to play for Bacari. Quite the coup for Mr. Alexander. Wonder if this move ruffled any feathers.

I did not think he would be taking players with him.

Good for BA, I'll be watching him at Detroit.......

He could find his way back to AA in the future

I'm not upset about it, but he actually was going to see significant playing time. I don't know if you've looked at the roster, but it's not very appealing at the moment. A true freshman is our only backup at the 3/4 spot which is where Chatman would've probably logged substantial minutes in 2016-17:

Walton, Simson

Maar, Ibi Watson

Duncan

Irvin, DJ Wilson

Donnal, Wagner, Teske, Davis

He has to sit out a year, but that year of development will hopefully work wonders.  They also added a German 7-footer who went to a prep school in Massachusetts.

The only online source I can find is the paper which shall not be named, but I won't sink to their standards of unethical sourcing*.

Link for those who want to read it.

* That's plagiarism ya'll.

EDIT: Source reference was not meant to be a dig at OP.  I thought folks who were UDM fans like me would like to get a bit more info on the other incoming players.

understand this.  He was finding more of a place in the rotation and was developing into a pretty reliable outside shooting threat.  I don't understand why this is the right move for him.  Dawkins I get.  Doyle I understand.  I think Chatman jumped the gun, while I understand that I certainly don't have all of the information.

some threes late in the season.  He played poorly in the beginning of the year and showed very little his freshman year, but anybody who was watching saw some promising developments from him late in the season.

He had the second highest usage rate on the TEAM and had the second lowest offensive rating of non benchwarmers. Even if he showed a *little* improvement, he was nowhere near a plus player, even at the end of the year. In fact, his conference schedule numbers were worse than his non-conference stats. An atrocious 20.2 : 12.0 turnover rate to assist rate ratio and he shot 37.5 percent from 2. He didn't even shoot enough threes (8) to say it was anything other than an anomaly, and anyone who watched him could see how awkward he still looked on the court.

The issue for Kam wasn't that he wasn't developing, but he wasn't developing fast enough. This is a guy who was a borderline 4-5 star when he was being recruited, yet if he was back at Michigan this year, probally wouldn't have started. Guys who had the "blue-chip" label usually expect to play, not sit on the bench as juniors.

No, it was not "one big outside shot." He was 39% from 3 starting February.

I saw a kid who tried too hard when he was on the floor, likely because he was fighting for minutes and due to Beilein's unpredictable substituion patterns. He also made some passes that only Walton or Spike were capable of. The problem was for every great pass, he'd force one and turn it over.

His biggest strength goes unnoticed to many and especially to stats: defense. You can look to the Purdue game we lost in the BTT, where Swanigan couldn't do a thing when Kam was in the game.

Kam's biggest limitation, certainly within the framework of Beilein's offense, was his ball handling. Maybe Bacari will be able to better leverage Kam's strengths and minimize the impact of his weaknesses. Regardless, no one can look at the wing/forward depth chart next year and say we are better off without him.

substitution patterns? They were dying for bench help and wins...had Chatman shown some consistency he would have found time.

Sure, but he also may have valued his relationship with Bacari and wanted to keep working with him. I wouldn't underestimate the power of that student/teacher bond.

I just don't see a scenario where he's getting 30+ minutes per game if he stayed here.  UDM has length issues.  If he can continue his development during this transfer year, he could be looking at a lot more playing time his final two seasons.

I'm surprised by this - assumed he'd head somewhere closer to home. It's too bad too, I think Kam still has a lot of potential and was beginning to contribute more towards the end of the season. We could've used the 3/4 depth next year too.

Despite their mediocre record, UDM has a surprising amount of talent. Patrick Bass is a headcase, but he also has potential NBA talent. They also brought in a really good recruiting class the year before. If Kam doesn't go there with a really cocky attitude, he could thrive with that team.
