Kalen and Kobe King commit to PSU

Submitted by Magnus on April 10th, 2020 at 2:50 PM

I know this has been expected prior to today, but here's a post confirming that Detroit (MI) Cass Tech brothers Kalen (4-star CB) and Kobe (3-star LB) King committed to Penn State today.

As I've said before, this is not a giant concern to me, but...

...let the meltdown commence.

Franklin is a good recruiter with a lot of recent success and he's hitting MI hard. Fair play to the cock doodler.

That's 3 of Detroits top 3 players who  committed to Penn State in 2 days.  I would rather have those 3 than have the kids from the Northeast.  If you include Lance Dixon Enzo Jennings and KJ Hamler PSU is cleaning up in the Detroit area for top recruits we should be getting.  Instead we getting kids from Massachusetts who we will hope to move to FB.  WE NEED TO RECRUIT OUR STATE FIRST if we are going after the low 4 star 3 star type players.

It's too bad we could not snag them.  Let's hope we get some good replacements.

But go easy on the NE recruiting.  Kwity Paye from the NE has turned out to be a good player for us along with others.  I know we want highly rated guys but in the end we want good players.

Hamler was a loss but he was not highly ranked at the time.  We had some highly ranked receivers come through.  Some have panned out some have not.

The King brothers are one thing but Jaylon Reed has a weird-ish recruitment.  He's reasonably well-ranked but per 24/7 doesn't have offers from OSU or UM and didn't get one when he visited UM unofficially.  It may be nothing but that caught my eye.

Also, at some point people may need to just accept that the coaches like what they see in certain kids and aren't settling on low-rated guys this early because they've given up hope.  As someone who lives in the Northeast I can see how recruiter ranking-types wouldn't come out here; I can also see why Don Brown and coaches with familiarity in the area may be inclined to track some of these guys down.

I'll repeat something I've said elsewhere, but Reed is a Viper. Michigan has recruited a ton of Vipers in the past couple classes. His talents are redundant. Maybe if he were a 2022 or 2020 prospect, he would have a Michigan offer. But the coaches aren't looking for much help at Viper in 2021.

Lance Dixon was a miss. Michigan pursued Jennings but he didn’t reciprocate interest so they got other safeties instead - Morant, Paige, and Mohan. KJ Hamler would have never worked in Michigan’s old offense. Hamler is much better suited for a spread offense which Michigan didn’t run until just recently.

Missing on Kalen King sucks but if they get their targets on LB and CB it won’t be a big deal

I agree with pretty much all of this. Jennings was only a huge miss if Michigan whiffed on better prospects at the position, but that's not necessarily the case since they landed Morant, Page, and Moran. That's why you have to look at the big picture and give things time to play out.

BTW, I've heard some things about Lance Dixon that make me think maybe it wasn't that much of a miss. I agree on Hamler. He made the right choice.

Kobe reminds me a little bit of Kenny Demens. And while Demens was a solid middle linebacker at Michigan, I'm not really sure how well he would fit at MIKE linebacker in Don Brown's defense. The last two MIKEs at Michigan have been Bush and McGrone, both of whom are more athletic and explosive than Demens/Kobe King.

Wish them luck; not particularly surprising.  At the same time, it's still some time out before signing day and we've seen guys change course.

Cass Tech ain’t what it used to be. The talent factory now resides in West Bloomfield

In this specific case its not the qualify of player that matters, its that Michigan wanted players from a pipeline school and couldn't get it done if you are looking for signs on how recruiting is trending.

Having said that I've never particularly been a you have to recruit Michigan guy. Get the best players you can, if the Michigan staff gets better players from other states for these spots and that is why they didn't push for them I don't really care

I've had basketball on the brain this week with all the roster moves so when I saw Kobe King in the title I assumed it was the guy who left Wisconsin mid-season.

PSU has been feasting on the lesser recruits in the state of Michigan. As long they're not poaching the Edwards, El Hadis, Spindlers, and Dellingers of the state then so be it

I was referring to this class as we didn't offer Reed and the King twins are barely top 10 players in the state. They've pulled some good players from the state recently like Jennings and Dixon , but as long they're not pulling the top 5 talent on a regular basis, we can pull better talent out of state

My point is the STATE of Michigan have alot of talent now where  10 of our top 15 should be Wolverines.  If you trying to find diamonds, they should look in state first.  Shoot, take one of these coaches that not good at recruiting and assign them to the powerhouse Michigan schools taking their top 3 players would be beneficial and also make the H.S. coaches happy and think UM first.
