Josh Uche skipping on-field drills at Combine due to injury

Submitted by realblue on February 24th, 2020 at 8:48 PM

Hamstring injury from the Senior Bowl will keep Uche from the on-field drills portion of the Combine. I was very interested to see what his 40 time and agility drill numbers would be.

Looking like he could still be as high as a 2nd round pick. Makes you wonder all the more how the coaching staff could only find him 20 snaps in The Game ? (sorry, still bitter).

It doesn't make sense to compare him Uche to Glasgow or Khaleke, since he doesn't play the same position. Uche is a pass rush specialist. They lined him up more like a rush end than a linebacker.

There's a bigger demand for elite pass rushers in the NFL -- mainly because NFL teams are more pass-centric.

65% of Ohio's plays in the Game were runs. Only 35% were passes.

By comparison, 60% of Kanas City's plays in the SuperBowl were passes.

Being an elite pass rusher is great, but his specialized skillset basically means that Uche only had a role on 1/3 of Ohio's plays from scrimmage in the Game.

That sucks. Uche would've killed the combine

I think Uche wasn't utilized properly and will be a solid pro

He's a pass rush specialist and our defense had problems stopping the run.

If every opponent obligingly went five-wide every down he'd have made them pay for it, but everybody knew we were painfully short of DTs.  You wanted him on the field for passing downs but we struggled just to get offenses into passing downs, and once you were in one it was smart to go tempo to keep Uche off the field.

Recruiting was bad but there was also an exodus.  We went from having more DTs than we knew what to do with -- a few were moved to OL -- to a 3-3-5 because we couldn't even field a two-tackle formation.

I have a suspicion that Mattison -- who coached the DTs during the decimation -- salted the earth as he left.

Maybe he will be ready to workout at Michigan's Pro Day which is March 13.  The Senior Bowl has a mini combine and a ton of NFL scout / coach field exposure, so Uche probably not missing much opting out of Combine workouts.

Nothing against Glasgow or Khaleke, but how they play 73 and 79 snaps, respectively, and a guy like Uche only gets 20 is beyond me.

This ^^^

He should have been playing OLB all game ... blitz when needed. Khaleke got rag dolled out of the play against good teams.
