To educate people about racially sensitive language is a noble endeavor. However, to attack people for making a play on words that may arguably be construed as racist is counterproductive.
The first 10 definitions of "melon head" listed on Urban Dictionary (that's as far as I was willing to read) make no mention of racist connotations. Even if the term is a racial slur, and it very well may be, it's at least obscure enough that you probably shouldn't assume a stranger is racist for using it.
