Joe Paterno has lung cancer, a treatable form.
November 18th, 2011 at 4:45 PM ^
.....then more health problems. Wow. Nevertheless, I wish him the best in recovering.
November 18th, 2011 at 4:53 PM ^
A tough patch indeed. Of course, the legacy being erased was self inflicted.
November 18th, 2011 at 4:53 PM ^
Interesting that this was released now. Dont underestimate the power of sympathy spin.
November 18th, 2011 at 6:16 PM ^
You can be very sure that both Joe Pa and PSU have a army of image doctors and spinmeisters working overtime right now. Very convenient that the announcement of his condition comes just when a dose of sympathy is needed.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:26 PM ^
Sorry to have to say it but I had the exact same thought...quite likely this has been known for a while...they would not have wanted to release it while he was there and already under criticism for not actively coaching the team.
Whole thing gets more sordid by the day
November 18th, 2011 at 8:43 PM ^
says Joe Pa's criminal defense attorney. Don't believe for a second that this annoucement is unrelated to scandal, especially since the Feds just decided they might give a quick peek into the goingson in Happy Valley.
November 18th, 2011 at 4:53 PM ^
LMAO! Idc what happend idc what psu wants to happen, that Legacy is impossible to erase.
November 18th, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
What he didn't do years ago is starting to dwarf what he did at PSU. They did remove his statue from in front of the stadium, I believe.
November 18th, 2011 at 6:14 PM ^
The statue anyway. Link
Not sure it's going anywhere. They did remove his name from the COY trophy.
November 18th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
of helping a child rapist to walk free and continue his crimes. And seriously, spell out I don't care. It's not that hard.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:10 PM ^
"And seriously spell out i don't care". Its an online blog, relax hoss.

A great book title for the upcoming Joe Pa story. I think, "Legacy Erased" is perfect! I won't buy the book, but it sure is a good title!
Go Blue!
November 18th, 2011 at 4:58 PM ^
there is no "good" form of lung cancer. My mother passed away from this illness in 2010 and the doctor's could not do much. Hopefully they caught Paterno's early, which would give him a better prognosis. The stress on him will not help though.
November 18th, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
Agreed. My father passed away September 9th, 2011 after a short battle with lung cancer. He was diagnosed July 9th. He also smoked for 46 years and died at age 61. Lesson being, dont smoke. You will die too early.
November 18th, 2011 at 5:09 PM ^
No one should mess with cancer. You are just asking for problems
November 18th, 2011 at 5:17 PM ^
As a lifelong PSU fan and now a UM student, I think it would behoove you all to wait until all the facts come out about what Paterno actually did/tried to do before damning him. This story isn't even close to over, and a lot of people (in particular the PSU BOTs) are going to end up with egg on their face at the end of all of this.
November 18th, 2011 at 5:29 PM ^
It would behoove lots of people to do lot's of things differently. Alas, when it comes to a situation like this that deals with the safety of children, it's fair to say the the court of public opinion deals with all involved in the style of a court martial: guilty before proven innocent.
Regardless, I wish JoePa a speedy and thorough recovery.
November 18th, 2011 at 6:06 PM ^
How could you possibly know that?
Leaving it as "wait until all the facts come out" is one thing.
Suggesting that you know the PSU BoTs are going to end up with "egg on their face" after the conclusion of the case without providing any supporting evidence (besides the fact that you're a PSU fan?) and which contradicts the available evidence we have reeks of someone who is looking to excuse JoePa for no good reason.
November 18th, 2011 at 6:43 PM ^
This story isn't even close to over, and a lot of people (in particular the PSU BOTs) are going to end up with egg on their face at the end of all of this.OK, we've got two possibilities here: 1. Someone who goes by "iCarly fan club" actually has inside information regarding Joe Paterno's actions over the past nine years. Perhaps this valuable font of information will even take the stand and testify during Sandusky's trial. 2. This poster is just another person blinded by the Cult of JoePa and is full of shit.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:54 PM ^
The BOT essentially worked for Paterno up until a week ago, his firing was done in part because they knew he had no viable alternative than to accept it. Make no mistake, when this matter gets in a criminal or even civil forum, the absolute falsity that Paterno had "bosses" that he answered to will not be treated with the same blind acceptance that it has been internally and even in the media. From what I have heard at this point, and I am an ethics attorney, Joe Pa at least colluded with Sandusky in a cover-up, he could arguably have been an accessory after the fact or even an accomplice in Sandusky actitives after his knowledge, depending particular on circumstantial evidnece and what can be shown about his knowledge and state of mind. Fellas, Joe Pa will likely be charged criminally, I set the odds at about 65-35 that he will be. There is something drastically wrong with the wording of that Grand Jury indictment, so wrong that I am sure it has raised eye-brows in Washington. Paterno is way to key of a player in that report, and mostly in a negative light, for him to come out unscathed by the totality of what was reported. I truly believe that Paterno will be indicted criminally for his role in the situation. This is coming from a seasoned legal mind, Paterno will face charges.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^
of your analysis at first. And I was befuddled by your tortured syntax.
But then you reassured us that "[t]his is coming from a seasoned legal mind."
Well.
That makes all the difference.
You must be right.
November 19th, 2011 at 5:32 AM ^
Good job missing the point bro. Read english much?
November 18th, 2011 at 5:19 PM ^
Well since Paterno already broke bad... and is now unemployed and with lung cancer...perhaps he will start cooking Meth to support his family.
November 18th, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
To complete the thought, he'll need to find that kid who was kicked off the team but is still hanging around PSU to help him with the lab. He already knows several lawyers with quasi-shady contacts.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:34 PM ^
"Yeah Jo Pa..Yeah Science!" says former PSU recruit Pinkman
November 18th, 2011 at 5:27 PM ^
if the doctor told him it was lung cancer and that treatment should begin immediately or if he described it as some rogue cells in his lungs that were just 'horsing around'?
November 18th, 2011 at 6:07 PM ^
I also wonder if Joe Pa was an nicotine addict or just enjoyed the company of smokers.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
Does Jerry Sandusky smoke.... i mean anything other than little boys c--k?
November 18th, 2011 at 6:18 PM ^
November 18th, 2011 at 5:38 PM ^
When JoePa was born, cancer of many varieties used to be an automatic death sentence.
Now we have human inquiry, science, research and technology.
It's 2011 and we're living in very fast, interesting times.
November 18th, 2011 at 6:00 PM ^
Lung cancer can be beaten if it's caught early enough but any treatment is likely to be rough on him at age 84.
November 18th, 2011 at 6:23 PM ^
The whole PSU story simply cannot go 24 hours without getting worse in some way.

Since Paterno's deposition isn't part of the public record, it's unlikely anyone will be able to confirm this.
November 19th, 2011 at 11:19 AM ^
I carly fan club up above might be right. BOT would have been better served by suspensiion pending investigation imo.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:59 PM ^
They fire him AND give him lung cancer? Seriously though, they should investigate Corbett.
November 19th, 2011 at 2:05 AM ^
Hope he get's well soon. So many people get cancer and it beats them, Joe is blessed anyways, but he's blessed to get a cancer you can fight.
November 19th, 2011 at 5:39 AM ^
I hope he gets well soon too. So he can face the outcome of what he either did or did not do.
