Jesse Minter Interview - In The Trenches Podcast, April 19

Hi all & happy Friday

I recently listened to the Jesse Minter interview on the In the Trenches Podcast (episode 346) and found it really interesting to listen to. Given it seems that everyone loves to hear spring tidbits and rumors, I figured I'd highlight this episode as you get to hear lots of great information on Defense directly from the man himself.

Minter goes through practically every position on defense, who he thinks has made jumps since last year, who needs some development, and the overall strategy this year compared to years past.

Cheers

That LB core sounds like its going to be something we haven't seen in a while... You have to be really excited about the defense up the middle starting with the DL, LB and Safeties.

He probably should have written "corps" based on the context of the original post, but you could also use "core" correctly in a different context like "the LB corps will be the core of the defense" or something.

I truly pity people who have to learn English as a second language.  It must be really annoying.

Right, a core is a central part of a thing, and a crops is a group.

I truly pity people who have to learn English as a second language.  It must be really annoying.

Even as a first language it's a massive pain. We homeschool our kids and getting my autistic son to learn spelling was like pulling teeth for a couple years. "That makes no sense! Why is it like that!?" Blame the French and to a lesser extent the vikings buddy, sorry, just how it is.

Great link - thanks for posting.   This will be the third year in "this system", since I feel there's consistency between Macdonald and Minter.   Though the D has performed well - increased experience, familiarity, communication, adjustments, etc. - reflect the maturity and consistency of "what they do" and how they do it.

Who does everyone have starting at the other boundary corner spot?

I think Walker and McBurrows split time early in the year until one of them flashes or (hopefully not), busts.

Question seems - how quickly can the freak talent Walker develop his technique and scheme, but don’t write off McBurrows who was receiving hype before his injury last year.

Hill will probably push from behind and we might need him against pass happy offenses like Maryland, OSU and in the playoff.  Grow up fast freshman!

Current position coaching may be the strongest I have seen across the board since the 90's at least. Coupled with returning talent, team culture and captains, young aspiring talent and recruiting going forward hype and I am hard pressed to remember such a good feeling going into an upcoming season!

Tempering optimism is the hard part but the work has been and is being done and even the NIL approach is modernizing which I am surprised by to be honest. Thought foot dragging would take longer.

Gonna be a long summer.

Thanks for posting.

For those who can’t listen, there was nothing groundbreaking, but he essentially goes through the entire depth chart position group by group and who he expects to contribute:

IDL: Jenkins a beast, Graham as expected, Benny probably most improved since Minter first arrived, Grant will be heard and the ability down the road to be dominant, Goode really improved this offseason and expected to contribute as the 5th guy.

DE: McGregor and Moore - a 1st rd talent down the road if he progresses right - will lock down the anchor, super reliable Harrell on the other side - a real student of the game/process. Very excited about the change up that Stewart is and will bring, and then Guy/Bennett made noticeable strides this spring and will battle for snaps as the 5th guy

LB: Colson and Barrett leading the way. Colson has as high a ceiling as anyone on the D. Haussmann is right on their heels and pushing them. NHG is still making his way back and will contribute. Rolder/Pollard battling for those next snaps. Depth is night and day vs last season. Expects to play the depth and allow Colson/Barrett to get some more rest this yr - they were banged up at the end of the season and the lack of depth hurt

DBs: Mikey is Mikey and Will is Will. Walker and McBurrows battling for that opposite spot. Walker still raw - thinks him getting beat in the spring game was the best thing that could happen to him - hopes/expects him to be fully ready/developed by the time the middle to the end of the season arrives. Harris mentioned as another guy and he also expects freshmen Hill to be able to contribute by the end of the season - don’t quite expect him on the Will Johnson track, but he’s likely going to see the field. Moore and Paige are unsurprisingly leading the way at S and Moten is the Jack of all trades. I don’t think he mentioned any of the other depth or young guys at the S spot, but this was also the first position he touched on so maybe he wasn’t fully into the groove of the conversation yet.
