I may be mistaken, but I believe NCAA rules stipulate that once someone takes the field and he's on any sort of scholarship, it counts towards the 85 player limit.
For instance, Alabama gives out the Bear Bryant scholarships, whereby any son or daughter of a player for bryant gets a full ride. Football can use those to sneak another player in, but only as long as the son does not take the field.

I believe that works until their Junior year. I thought that with the Bear Bryant scholarship in particular the kids could play as Juniors and not count against the limit.

How about RichRod giving Fred a $25,000-30,000/year raise and Jeremy walks on?
