It's an Ann Arbor kind of night

Submitted by Wendyk5 on

Just got into town for homecoming. Ate a $17 sandwich at Zingerman's after waiting in line for an hour. Got a brownie to go. Now I'm watching "The Big Chill" in my hotel room. It certainly is an Ann Arbor kind of night. Go Blue!

A few corrections: 1. They don't show a pick against State. They show a 60 yard screen pass from John Wangler to Craig Dunaway. In the movie, that play is called back for clipping. In the actual game, there was no clipping and we scored a TD on that drive. 2. The only character that trashes blue and the helmets is Jeff Goldblum's character, who was supposed to be a wise guy kind of a*hole anyway. One of the other characters actually defends Bo, saying he's got enough to worry about. But still, given that that movie was written by a Michigan alum, that line about the helmets being the ugliest in football should have never made the script. And truth be told, the whole ending of asking your husband to go upstairs and knock up your best friend was....bizarre.

Yeah, I don't get the helmet thing.  Unless he really didn't like the helmets.  Maybe he didn't.  Not every body likes everything Michigan related.

Brian Cook as a movie writer, circa 2012:  "That's it, teach them the basics, Hoke.  Ugliest bright yellow maize in football."

As for the pick, why did he (I forget the character) look at the woman (I forget the character) and say "Don't look at me, I didn't throw it."?

I was at school at Michigan when the movie first came out in '83 and saw it in Ann Arbor.  It was a big deal then, of course.  We all cheered when the football scenes came on, but boo'd when they showed the pick / penalty scene whatever it was, and when Goldblum made the helmet comment.

I've gotta be honest, I always thought it was kind of a lame, self-indulgent movie.  If it was about Wisconsin or Georgia grads instead of Michigan grads, I would have hated it.

Pretty good soundtrack though, especially the "Can't Always Get What You Want" scenes.

Board appears to get a bit drunker Friday nights when it's a 330 as opposed to noon kick. Also, for the love of god people, here's and insider tip: do not wait in line an hour for zingermans. Call your order in ahead of time for pick up. Even when they're busy, takes about 30-40 minutes, and you skip the line.

This reminds me of one of the things I wish I could fromally track during "The State Of Our Open Threads" analyses, and that is the relative sobriety - or lack of it - on the board during various start times. Generally, the board has already had a few for 3:30 PM kicks whether an individual is at the stadium or not, and I do note the start time for each game in the spreadsheet - 3:30 PM games are more "intense" for us when it comes to language. Just an informal observation.

I'm from Okemos and having an East Lansing kind of night. First, I got my brahs together and we called in some strippers. Next, we went drinking at the bar. Now we're lighting some cars on fire at cedar village.

I wish I was there.  I could not go to A2 this year.  I live in the DC area, so I was hoping that going to the Maryland game would be a good substitute.

Um, not so much.  The place was dead.  College Park is no Ann Arbor, even when the only people that are there are Michigan people.

For a sandwich being served by people that are fully clothed, though they are delicious. The sandwich, not the staff. Which is not to say anything bad about zingerman's employees, I'm sure they taste just fine too.
