It's 1988 and Michigan is beating Ohio State in the 3rd quarter, 20 - 7!

The 1988 Michigan Ohio State  game is on BTN right now. Mike Gillette just missed a field goal attempt. I'm going to be strong and not Google the final score.

I see 1988 as the beginning of Michigan's 10-2-1 streak of dominance over OSU.  The rivalry became so non-competitive for a few years that I remember the gloriouis experience of watching the scarlet and gray pour out of the Big House at the beginning of the fourth quarter of the Heisman pose game.  And even those who hadn't left yet headed for the exits after the pose.

Remember that day, because the series can change direction in one game.  It might even happen this fall.  If it doesn't, 2011 may be the year that turns out to be another 1988 for the rivalry.  So, enjoy your scarlet and gray delusions while you can; it will be fun to watch your fanbase turn on Tressel after he loses four or five in a row to Michigan.  They were starting to turn on him for his misuse of Pryor last year; I can't wait to see what happens when they decide that his methods are too "old school" for the era currently being ushered in by RR.

If the BTN is showing an Ohio State game from 1988, I wish they would show their game against Indiana.  It was supposed to be revenge match for the Bucks 31-10 loss to IU the previous year in Columbus.  But the Hoosiers blanked them again 41-7 in Bloomington.

Can someone explain two of the calls from that game?

First was an Ohio State fumble that we picked up and ran into the endzone but they called dead where we picked it up.  It was unclear to me why it was considered dead upon Michigan grabbing it.

Second was in the second half where the officials twice stopped play to warn the crowd... not sure what this was about.  I'm assuming it was some stupid rule that has since been removed.

...is correct.  There were several games in the '80s where Michigan took (or attempted) to take full advantage of this misguided rule.  Games in the Metrodome especially come to mind.  Sometimes it worked, sometimes the officials ignored the QB's pleas that the crowd noise was too much.  As I recall, the rule was not applied consistently and it also encouraged unseemly play acting on the part of the offense.

but the first might be where one official thought the ball was dead and blew a whistle while Michigan ran it in, resulting in just getting the ball where we picked it up.

I know how they end, but how come it always feels like I should expect a different final score? Maybe if I watch the '06 game enough times, Lloyd will go for a TD instead of settling for a field goal late in the 4th....
