The sticker reads ANF which stands for 'America Needs Farmers'

"Hayden Fry put on decals that reminded people that AMERICA NEEDS FARMERS (ANF). Fry knew the Hawks would be playing on national television numerous times and felt he could get the message out to the entire country that farming and agriculture were very important to the people in the Midwest. "

Nice research here. +1
As an aside - HBR recently found that Farmers receive some of the lowest pay in the country but apparently smile the most:

If you play Farmville on Facebook while at your office job, you can have the best of both worlds.

So would that make the 2009 version of AMF 'America Needs Farmville' or just 'America Needs Facebook?'

It's "ANF" for "America Needs Farmers." I wonder if this is just for tonight, because they haven't usually worn the sticker under Ferentz.

Apparently my guess of it being a lightning bolt was way off.

I always really liked those helmet decals.
Although it's always irked me how much Hayden Fry gratuitously ripped off the Pittsburgh Steelers. changed the colors and everything.

Stumbled across this thread and I wanted to let you know that Iowa didn't rip them off. Iowa was struggling in the 60s/70s and Fry wanted to capture a winning "look". The Steelers were, obviously, one of the best teams of the 70s. Fry contacted Art Rooney asking for permission to use the helmet scheme and a home uni. Rooney was kind enough to send back a full home and road set along with the helmet design.

they should totally keep that if they already don't. would be a sweet tradition. almost as cool as having wings on your helmets
