An Inquiry for MMBhorn

Submitted by Big Boutros on
Sorry to all for using up MGoBoard space for this kind of communication, but perhaps we can make this a community-wide discussion. Anyway: Many weeks ago, before the school year was even out, MMBhorn was kind enough to poll the MGoBoard for halftime show ideas. I proposed a medley of songs by the band Muse, because they are awesome and their music would sound exceptional coming from the Michigan Marching Band. MMBhorn seemed to like the idea. I have two questions regarding that suggestion meeting with Monsignor Boerma: 1. Did it ever take place, and if so, what was the feedback? 2. Is it too late to throw out another idea? If not, consider the following three songs from the Indiana Jones trilogy (KOTCS was not a real movie): From Raiders: Desert Chase From Temple: Slave Children's Crusade From Last Crusade: Belly of the Steel Beast (It was off YouTube for years!) I stand by my Muse suggestion, but oh my holy Boutros how awesome it would be to hear those Indy songs by the MMB. I am of the sincere opinion that anything, even that weird funeral dirge for Queen Mary from A Clockwork Orange, sounds awesome when the MMB plays it. Thanks!

Indiana Jones was written by John Williams, so that is not going to happen (we ran into some gray area regarding copyright a few years ago after doing a John Williams show while I was in band) My guess is that he was taking a poll to suggest to Boerma around the time of the Spring Meeting, which is one of the last points when they solicit ideas. The rest of the summer is spent arranging and putting the ideas together.

There were a couple Indiana Jones fragments in that John Williams show. We weren't able to put it on our cd because of the iffy copyright scenario, but we did record it. If you happen to know anyone who was in band in 2002 (or was it 2003? Help me here, Ameed) we got copies of the recording. I don't think I have mine anymore, or I'd hook you up.

I would have had no idea (I wish I had written down what we played and when) but the John Williams opener is actually on the 2002 season highlights disc (star wars opening, and superman theme). I don't think we have a recording of any other part of that show, so a season DVD might be the only thing that has it. Boutros, it was a sweet ass show though, I just got chills re-listening to what I did have. Stupid laws.

Yeah, its definitely gray area, though I don't know what made JW different than other composers. Typically the director (or STOUT!!!) does an arrangement and attributes the original author, but we were told that in that particular case it was fishy-er. One extra difference with the MMB is the CD sales that the which would have taken it up another notch.

I'm basically a musical idiot, so I have no idea how well it'd translate to marching band, but I think the horns in various Fela Kuti songs and those by other High Life guys are pretty much the awesomest things in the world. Maybe this would work better with the pep band at basketball games?

wow, seeing my name on the board was kind of surreal for a second. But yes, I did request the Muse show. I didn't hear anything back, but that's pretty standard. Rest assured, all of the (reasonable) suggestions that were made in the last thread were suggested to Professor Boerma. Hopefully the Muse show pans out, because I thought that was a fantastic suggestion.
