This will be the thread for hot takes regarding the defense and defensive playcalling.

Big guts in the effort. Big concern with the lack of pass rush from our front 4, minus Morris.

Also want to note major disappointment in the student section crowd. This was homecoming, the last game of the year, and a must win game, and that section was only 2/3 full.

It was really cold today. It was also windy. There were a shit-ton of non-students who didn’t show up. It’s easily viewable if you want to look on the TV. Whining about student attendance from your couch is stupid when it is 70 degrees and dipshit moronic when it is 25 degrees.

When you want to complain about the students, just don’t. Go to your outhouse and read your Sears Robuck catalog and think about all the fun you had when you were young playing stick and hoop

I got major negs last week for criticizing the student section which was only half full at halftime of the Nebraska game and maybe 1/3 full by the 4th quarter.  (Fortunately I made enough witty comments throughout the week to stay on the plus side of 2200 points)

My buddy commented to me during the pregame promo video that M students have enthusiasm unknown to mankind only if it's a sunny day and over 50 degrees.

TV was using an endzone shot that highlighted the diminishing student section as the game went on - not a good look for us.

BTW is was "senior day" not homecoming.

There were just enough key stops. There times Chase Brown gashed the defense. They gave up 14 pts in the 2nd half but again, this was a hard earned win.

Very good against a motivated team playing for a Big10 title.  Clutch at the end.  DJ with a great tackle and stop. 11 & 0.  DJ has been quite a playmaker this year. as has Will.  Need the whole secondary and team to be at their best next week.

I said it before. I will say it again. I remember us losing to Iowa before OSU on a similar crappy game. This Defense came up clutch when needed. Onward

Cannot complain much about the D.  They kept Brown in check and were hung out to dry by the offense and spent waaaay too much time on the field in the 2nd half.

Plus the 4th down stops.  Wow!

The coaching is making this team play above its talent level on defense.

Sure, we have great talent/depth at many spots, but we absolutely lack the pass rushing proficiency typical of a contender - and that’s largely due to the depth chart at edge.

A couple bad drives in there but this defense continues to be lights out. Also looks like Johnson has passed Turned at corner. Great performance out of the secondary today.

Pass rush generated zero pressure today. That is a very bad omen going into Columbus because thats how you get destroyed. Its gonna be way more like 2018 than it is like 2021

They did their jobs today. Not their best performance but they made the plays they needed to make. They miss Mike Morris for sure.

What I’m concerned about, though, is that there was zero pass rush today. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Illinois had time to do whatever they wanted to do. Yes, there was no Mike Morris and that’s not nothing, but the fact that they still got none on Illinois is a really, really bad omen going into next week.

If you get no pressure on Stroud, you have no chance barring a completely offensive rampage of your own. You thought Illinois carved you up? That’s nothing compared to what OSU can do.

I know we only gave up 17,  but Illinois gift wrapped us at least 3 plays that probably would have extended drives. A false start, a bad snap, and I forget the last one, but they were for the most part unforced errors.

We got ran on more than usual and Morris being out was noticeable because the pass rush was completely non existent.

Next week is going to be a completely different animal and honestly I think if we can keep them under 40 it’s a win for the defense.

Defense played soft in the first half, seemingly trying to keep everything in front of them, but also didn't shut Illinois down in the second half, and didn't seem to adjust to what they were doing very well... was exacerbated by DeVito making plays. Bert is goofy, but can coach .
