Hypothetical MNC scenario involving Florida and Penn State

Submitted by maizenbluedevil on
Per usual college football fan standard operating procedures, I was just thinking ahead way, way past where we currently are about how the MNC picture might shape up this year and thought of an intersting little scenario that very well could materialize, and would show the MNC for the farse it is, i.e. a commercialized beauty pageant where the quest for ratings is the bottom line. (literally and figuratively) So, riddle me this.... Let's say, hypothetically, Texas and Penn State both finish the season undefeated. (Look at their schedules, this is *very* plausible, esp. for Penn St.) And let's say Florida - who faces a tough schedule - ends the season with 1 close loss to a highly touted SEC opponent. In that scenario, does a 1 loss Florida team leapfrog an undefeated Penn St. and go to the MNC? Discuss. (For the record, I think they do. The BCS polling, for all of its alleged objectivity, is still determined mostly by voters. Let's face the facts, Florida/Tebow in the MNC is the sexy pick. And if they - with 1 loss - get in the MNC over an undefeated team from a BCS conference.... that just makes any claim of the legitimacy of the current system a total joke. Another scenario that could end up in this same conclusion - and could be more plausible: - Texas finishes undefeated - So does Alabama after beating Florida in a close SEC championship game, becoming number 1 in the BCS rankings. - Florida, having just lost to Alabama and having 1 loss, leapfrogs undefeated Texas to play Alabama in a rematch for the MNC. This second scenario would be especially juicy because it's exactly what happened in 2006 w/ M, OSU, and UF, when Urban Cryer whined his way into the MNC game using the logic that because M didn't win their conference, they shouldn't be in the MNC game. If he and all the SEC supremacists end up on the other side of that logic this year, it would expose them once and for all for the hypocrites they are. LOL Can you tell I'm still bitter about 2007?)

You had me up until Penn State having an easy schedule, which is obviously wrong because they play Michigan. /sarcasm Really, NC talk already? Texas has not even played yet today.

The hypothetical scenario I posted was just to try to make it more concrete.... also, if that Texas/Alabama/Florida scenario woere to materialize, it'd be juicy. The reason I mentioned Penn State is I think it's quite possible they could go undefeated, perhaps moreso than any of the other teams near the top. The real core of my question, though, is would a Forida team with 1 close loss to a formidable SEC opponent leapfrog an undefeated team from a BCS conference to land in the MNC game?

They changed the BCS rules and 2 teams from the same conference can't play in the mythical Championship Game. I think it was in direct response to 2006.

It depends on when and to who Florida loses to. I think Penn State would be in, honestly. The prestige of being undefeated is still really high, especially in an era where BCS teams just don't do that. A better scenario is PSU going undefeated and Florida losing one game while Cincinnati also goes undefeated.

I can't see any one-loss team jumping an undefeated team from the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, or SEC. If there were three undefeated teams from those four conferences, then I think PSU would definitely be left out, though. The question is interesting, because it would be a great barometer of just how much respect the Big Ten has or doesn't have among voters.

I, for one, know of one Big Ten team that Florida couldn't stop from scoring large amounts of points. They play in Ann Arbor, MI. And are (currently) not considered one of the best two teams in the Big Ten. Granted, this team couldn't stop Florida either, but I'm selling Florida's defense and buying Michigan's offense against Florida's defense. Viva la shootouts! Viva la miniscule time of possession! Viva la terrible "viva la" puns with shitty spanish!
