How will Michigan free up scholarships?

Submitted by Bo Knows on

Who will finish up the 2013 class has been much discussed on the board, but how will we get the schollies for them?  As of this second, there are 23 available for next year.  There are currently 23 commits, and assuming they all stay committed (Conley really looks like he's going to stay) we could potentially need 4 more if we get McQuay, Treadwell, Green, and another Olineman.  I think it's safe to say Lewan is going pro and Mike Jones won't be returning, but all of the other redshirt juniors had roles on this team.  Would we stop at 25 and say no to one or potentially 2 five star players?

This is a major problem in football recruiting.  They really need to have an early signing period like they do in basketball.  I feel like kids committ early so they hold a spot in the class.  Then they continue to look around.

So what happens if a kid signs early with Auburn before the season started, then they witness the tire fire that was the Tigers season, subsequently followed by Chizik being fired.

Since he signed early he's obligated to stay committed even though he doesn't know who the new coach will be and how he'll fit into his plan. That seems terribly unfair to the recruit who signed early.

There is no easy solution to this problem, recruiting has and will become crazier and crazier every year.

Not a perfect solution, but non-binding letters of intent you can sign any time after your junior year would help. If an athlete signs a NOBLOI then only the school they're pledged to can contact them (and are no longer limited). But anytime until signing day you can rescind it. Shane Morris can benefit from full contact with his future coaches, and Gareon Conley can leave his options open so he can check out different schools and find the right one for him. It would also solve the problem of "saving a spot" with a verbal commitment, since if you sign a NOBLOI you can't receive other offers or take other visits.

10 currently open spots.
13 seniors graduating
1 likely junior to NFL
1 likely unrenewed 5th

Also not sure of injury situations, and further attrition is inevitable. Being over by 2 on signing day is fine; over by 13 is not.
