How is Archie Collins not a booster and therefore under the NCAA scanner for W.Gholston

Submitted by DesHow21 on
Archie is a former MSU player and I assume alumni..so is by definition, a booster. He also happens to conveniently have W.Gholston living with him. Therefore Gholston has no pretty much no choice but to go to MSU when he has the Alabama's and USC's of the world chasing him. If distance is an issue Michigan should fit the bill just as well as anybody else. Yet Gholston has pretty much not even made a pretense of considering anybody else. How the hell is NCAA not investigating this? How is this any different from Michael Oher living with the white family who were Ole Miss boosters and deciding to go Ole Miss to play his college ball?

-cannot buy a drink for your favorite 21+ player -friends of players cannot have anything be 'on them' in terms of food, drink, etc. -roommates can't offer rides? -designated driver vs. forced cab ride? there has to be exceptions. i know there are. for example, hockey boosters are only allowed to have players over for dinner X amount of times and have to live on or near campus, etc. uncle had to quit having kids over for generic home-cooked meals because he lived too far away.

Boy, if they have to work THIS HARD to get one stud recruit from Michigan every once in awhile, maybe we shouldn't give a rat's arse. Besides, what if Gholston actually--GULP! likes Michigan State and wants to play there? Should we think Manny Harris is a loon for not wanting to go to Michigan State for basketball?

Everyone citing jeremy jackson, braylon edwards, or troy woolfork as analogous to Gholston are dumb. I'm not saying this Archie Collins actually can be guilty of any wrongdoing but this isn't the same as with those players. Collins, though not the parent (but does live with him) of Gholston steered him well around a2, and has also done the same with Hankins, who grew up a Michigan fan. Yeah, we sound bitter when we mention it but it's just a weird situation sorta like the Bryce Butler recruitment.

"Collins is Gholston's guardian, just as Fred Jackson is to Jeremy, Stan Edwards is to Braylon, and Butch Woolfolk is to Troy." If you were posting this in response to my question (which was right above this), that's not exactly what I was asking. In the case of the latter 3 those are their parents. While they are almost the same legally they aren't identical. Which is part of the reason I asked. I was just wondering because just because a child lives with someone does not mean that the person is their legal guardian. But if you know for sure that he's actually Gholston's legal guardian, I'll take your word for that if you know it for certain.

As a person who mentioned Jackson, I'm not saying that Collins isn't exerting an awful lot of anti-UM influence (if the rumors are true). That's not what the OP's initial accusation was, though. He was thinking the NCAA should investigate Collins simply for having Gholston living with him. That's a whole different point. And for God's sake, Woolfolk. People should have this figured out by his third year on campus.

Came across this just now from a while ago. But to comment, as mentioned this is not at all uncommon and that's why it didn't need any investigation. Not to mention, Archie Collins is well known for being a genuine mentor to players and whether it's MSU or OSU he will create chances for talented players to end up where they can make the biggest impact for THEIR career, having nothing to do with his career. "Booster" had been an overused word in a negative way ever since the Fab5 here at Michigan, but the situation here is totally unrelated. MSU and OSU also have great coaches and aside from the days of Tressel, these coaches care about the kids. Nobody should be investigated for that.
