Hoops Recruiting Discussion (2021 Class)

Submitted by Jordan2323 on November 1st, 2020 at 9:17 PM

I'm trying to move away from football, at least for a few days. The hoops season is coming up soon. Id like to get some form of discussion going on hoops recruiting. As its kind of known we are searching for a big to finish out our class.

I watched highlights for the 3 IMG bigs and I like Reid the best. I like his style of play and I think we could do a lot of high/low with him and Dickinson. Hes got that old school Tim Duncan game to him. I would put Diabate a close second and then Bediako third. I like the athleticism of Diabate and he has a smooth outside shot. Bediako seems unpolished at this point and doesn't have the offensive game of Reid or the athleticism of Diabate. Questions on his motor from scouts as well.

How do you all see the class ending up and who would your preference be? We could always add a 7th to the class as well with any attrition. Any other discussion on this, other recruits or the team in general would be appreciated.

I've heard we're still in the running to get that Holmgren kid. That'd be pretty amazing because I'm not sure I've ever seen a player quite like him.

I’ve only watched about 5min of his highlights, so I’m fairly naive about his skill set. He seems to me like a dude who would require a significant transition period to be successful in college (and more importantly, a college dietary and strength/conditioning program). Is he really expected to be a transcendent talent or someone who could pull a Carmelo and drag his team to a championship as a freshman?

Holmgren is ranked so highly due to his max NBA ceiling which could be pretty damn high. He's a 7 footer who can handle the ball, shoot, and protect the rim. However, like you said, he needs to put on probably 30 pounds to hang with college bigs and 40-50 pounds to hang with NBA bigs. In college, his coach will likely need to scheme him into a position to be successful due to how skinny he is. He is not a 5 star who can join a college team and really make a game changing impact imo. Gonzaga might be his best option due to how poor of competition they play

I prefer Diabete. He's long and athletic. If his improvement on the perimeter is for real, he would be a perfect fit for the modern basketball era.

That being said, I'm completely fine with Reid or Bediako. I trust Juwan to land on one of the three big to complete his class.

Respectable attempt.  But we do love the football.  The people gotta vent.  We're sad-face emoji for the foreseeable future.  However...

I too like Reid's game and his ABA style.  More importantly, though, I like what Juwan is doing.  He demonstrated some great coaching chops the first part of the year, and good ones throughout.  Great leaders appreciate they don't know it all, and he's shown he doesn't have to be the smartest person in the room (e.g., hired Phil Martelli and all his experience).  His recruiting efforts in 1.5 years get an A so far (based on time in cycles and results) with room to grow and sustain.  And he's in his first HC gig.  If he continues to grow, continues to show how his game plans evolve during a long conference season, continues to recruit at or above his present level, he'll leave a very high bar for anyone that follows.

I agree, early on he has really shown well as a head coach. His recruiting and coaching acumen is impressive. Great staff with him as well. I'm excited to see what he can do in the next few years. It won't be for a lack of talent if he doesn't win big. The team he inherited last year is still a Beilein team, itll be interesting to see the differences going forward.

Id also like to get peoples take on the rule where players are getting an extra year and what kind of impact do you see next year for Michigan? How many players do you see staying?

Its exciting to see how the program is changing under Juwan. I think we all knew that replacing Coach Beilein's ability to find "diamond in the rough" guys would be nearly impossible. That fact he has been able to come in and completely change UMs recruiting philosophy and be this successful in just over a year is pretty incredible.

i've been really impressed with Juwan's recruiting acumen.

very good first class, and what is looking like an even better class. I was surprised with the Houstan verbal, to an already strong class to boot.

Getting another big would really be amazing...I've avoided watching too many highlights, just because you never know with 5* kids. Which might be one of the reasons why Beilein didn't go that route...He was such a great talent developer, I think he felt that it wasn't going to be worth the time and effort for him to wade into those waters.

I like Juwan's approach: nail down the bulk of the class with very good players who will stick around for 2-3 years and then focus on a few big timers.

any of the remaining targets would be insane. Diabate is a kid that might be better than people think. Holmgren seems like he's leaning to the Zags. Bediako sounds like an Alabama lean (though maybe the Canadian ties with Houstan may sway him) Reid would also be a huge get.

I agree as well.  I am happy with our 7-footer but must recognize his limited lateral movement and poor rebounding outside of his space.... that should be with us a couple years......would love for this second center to be a 6 10 guy that strikes fear in the heart of the other team's offense.  Put the 4 big guards and wing scorers around him and you have the key to contemporary basketball dynasties.

Very happy with Juwan's approach.  As great as this class is, we really do need a big man in this class.  Otherwise we have some serious depth problems at the 5.  Assuming we get a big guy, I think this class gets a very solid "A."

Need a center who can defend on the perimeter and I don't think Reid is it. Would rather have one of the other two.

Feel like Reid is the best option and most likely to end up in the 2021 class. He would give us the best return value and likely stay for at least a few years unlike Bediako and Diabate who I could see being OaDs. I think Diabate is the best player of the 3 and will be a lottery pick, but I haven't really heard much Michigan buzz with him and he seems like he might be exploring the G League route

Sidenote: Thank you for posting a basketball thread. Need to not think about football for a little while

This Michigan fan is more than happy to change the interest/viewing venue to basketball-it's the best sport to play and its my favorite sport, overall. The early indications are that Juwan Howard is going to take Michigan basketball to a very good place-possibly to a sustained elite level.

Here, off the top of my head, is my take on the Michigan big-man situation: I view Dickinson as being a solid contributor-along the lines of Teske...medium floor with a medium ceiling. I believe he is a four year player. On the posed OP question, Diabate or Reid clearly demonstrate excellent potential. At this point, Bediako's tape shows that he is tall. The athleticism and skillset of Diabate is most impressive and makes him my first choice. I do like Reid a lot and if he wishes to commit I would not wait for Diabate. But I would make a great effort to convince Diabate to join the good guys-I rate him as the #1 priority. Holmgren wasn't included but he is also in the mix. Tough call for me between him and Reid as far as prioritizing. Given that Dickinson already gives you an inside presence...I take take Holmgren ahead of  Bediako but not ahead of the other two. Regardless, excellent options.

Thank you for redirecting us to basketball!

I am pretty happy with what Juwan has done in recruiting - we'll see if Houstan signs to be sure, but it appears he is doing a hell of a job. As down on football I am, I'm that far up and more about hoops!!
