Holiday Bowl Open Thread
This one is again created early for everyone's convenience, and in the event that I am putting the kiddos to bed when the game starts. If nothing else, we need to match the hilarity of last night's Belk Bowl thread, which was a wonderful indictment of the game itself.
What everyone has been waiting for - The Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl!
So, tune in to ESPN again at 8 PM for California (7-5) versus Texas (7-5) in another battle of so-so teams that will hopefully provide everyone some great Wednesday night entertainment.
I went Texas on this one in the pool.

We demand less defense and more scoring immediately!
December 28th, 2011 at 9:05 PM ^
Cal starting to move the ball fairly well
Edit: Of course right as I say that Cal goes 3 and Out...
Sweet sack by that Texas guy though
December 28th, 2011 at 9:04 PM ^
Jessie Palmer is really enthusiastic about a guy who's averaging 3.6 yards/pass.
Ed: Why don't the Longhorns just put a couple of those athletes on offense and run a wildcat all game. That'd be good for 14-17 points per game.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:06 PM ^
Compared to Jessie's NFL career.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:06 PM ^
S on the chest well earned. I guess that's the 5 star difference.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:06 PM ^
I must say that Meeeeaaack Brown is overrated as a coach. Not a competent game manager and oblivious to offensive (pun) football. While the last 3 years have not been easy for us, think about Texas for a moment. They have a top 5 recruiting class every year and never have to leave their own state to recruit! They also have their recruiting classes filled two years out.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:08 PM ^
I remember a national championship game in 2009-10. That's not too bad.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:22 PM ^
He's proven himself at Texas. Being an injury away from winning an NC earns him the right to the chance to get them back on track. That was the worst injury of the decade (impact on the game-wise), because it led to an SEC addicition by ESPN and probably attributed to the rematch this year. All anyone ever brings up is the SEC championship streak.

Drive still alive for Tejas.
Never mind, penalty killed that.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:12 PM ^
Wow....great fake punt knocked out by a Illegal Formation
December 28th, 2011 at 9:16 PM ^
EDIT: MOAR SACKS!
December 28th, 2011 at 9:12 PM ^
The Raiders 35 yard TD on a fake FG called back because of delay of game.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
1-2-3-kick, 1-2-3-kick
December 28th, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
December 28th, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
This could one of the more boring games I've ever seen
December 28th, 2011 at 9:19 PM ^
Texas is 7-5 yet they're ranked #24. What's up with that?
December 28th, 2011 at 9:22 PM ^
Big 12 is the greatest conference ever. Just ask the computers.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:27 PM ^
7-0 against unranked teams, 0-5 against ranked teams (all blowouts.)
Most notable win was a 2 point victory over 6-6 Texas A&M. Somehow, that equals to a top 25 ranking. Most impressive resume.....ever.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
You answered your question with your first word.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:25 PM ^
they're unranked in the polls. It's all computers. Robots have them at 19.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:30 PM ^
Good point, I forgot they used the BCS rankings for broadcasts. Can we never reference "PREDICTOR" again just because TAMU was ranked 11th in Jeff Sagarin's BCS computer rankings at the end of the regular season?
December 28th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
Is that points?
December 28th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
3 lob passes in a row to get a TD
December 28th, 2011 at 9:24 PM ^
Tailback throw back to the quarterback. Russel Wilson caught a few passes like that this year.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:25 PM ^
Nothing screams "we have a solid offense" like running a reverse pass from four yards out.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:26 PM ^
Aaand Cal gets the kickoff to their own 43.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:27 PM ^
Is Ricky Williams the guy you want to say "come to our University and emulate"?
December 28th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
So is Texas about to start chucking the ball all over the place now?
December 28th, 2011 at 9:34 PM ^
Ash or McCoy? No. Statistics say otherwise. Random skill position players? Possibly.
December 28th, 2011 at 9:33 PM ^
Can Texas break through on 3rd and 2?
December 28th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
Stop committing penalties! All of you! Now!
December 28th, 2011 at 9:41 PM ^
December 28th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
Two dropped shotgun snaps?
December 28th, 2011 at 9:59 PM ^
Shocker, on the halftime stuff Lou Holtz picks Notre Dame to beat FSU
December 28th, 2011 at 10:11 PM ^
Christ I just saw the score, glad I'm not watching.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:17 PM ^
Texas seem like they just play lazy. Huge and talented with no motivation or fire.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:28 PM ^
Maynard's dad. Looks like him. Yawn.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:48 PM ^
Toss is the worst play in football in any level past high school freshman football.
December 28th, 2011 at 10:59 PM ^
Wow. Cal is TURRIBLE (since this seems to be the meme of the day).
December 28th, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
December 28th, 2011 at 11:08 PM ^
I would say Ash.
Cal must have played some terrible teams or the PAC12 must have had terrible pass defenses if he can put up over 3000 yards passing.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:03 PM ^
Cal loves turning the ball over whenever they are in a slightly favorable position.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:15 PM ^
December 28th, 2011 at 11:19 PM ^
One guy on local radio in socal today were railing on the fact that there are too many bowl games. He said that a team like UCLA doesn't really deserve to go to the bowl game with a losing record (6-7).
The other guy was for it, but watching some of these games I can see why people are becoming negative towards all these bowl games.
I personally love it. It allows us to get more practice time for our young players and give our seniors one last game.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:16 PM ^
And this game still sucks.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:29 PM ^
I don't understand why Cal is not in a BCS bowl and Stanford is. Stanford didn't even win their division.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:31 PM ^
Why is Stanford? They lost to the only put together football team they played, and badly.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:39 PM ^
USC was a pretty good victory, even if it took 3 OTs. Without sanctions, USC was easily a top 10 team.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:44 PM ^
I can't look at our VT match up and legitimatley argue with you, so fair enough.
EDIT: Same for Farnn.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:40 PM ^
USC was a pretty good team this season, they just don't show up in the rankings due to post season ineligibility.
