EXACTLY what I meant (and should have stated, that's on me for omitting it) with my "C'mon. Be real" comment in reply to OccaM.  I trust Harbaugh and his staff to make that judgement and ensuing decision of visit McLane Carter.

If this then turns into an offer, well, again I trust JH on this. Let's see how this plays out rather than wailing and gnashing our teeth over a visit to an unrated QB prospect.

What's more, who's to say that Jimmy and staff can't turn Bellomy into a servicable QB?  Our previous staff didn't show any ability to develop any of our QB's---Denard dazzled us with his already-existing unworldly God-given talents in a completely different way; DG regressed, except for occasional flashes of brilliance, and no other QB ever to take the field over the last 4 seasons did anything to brag about.

Need as many 'bullets' as we can afford.

Obviously, this kid is the next Drew Brees...

The 6-foot-2 1/2, 190-pound Carter has completed 74.1 percent of his passes for 3,192 yards, 37 touchdowns, and only one interception this season, which has the Buckeyes 13-0 entering Friday night's state quarterfinal against fellow East Texas squad Atlanta.

He moves his feet well and can throw a dart across his body. I wonder who called Harbaugh to get him on the radar. Competition is good but shit Malzone has shown so much leadership and loyalty.

Competition is always great, and obviously in Harbaugh we trust, but his highlight video makes it pretty clear why he has no major offers.  Poor measurables, weak arm strength, mediocre competition.  Those deep balls hang a lot, and I don't see a lot of zip on intermediate throws. That said, he does have excellent touch and pretty good accuracy, so maybe the coaches are figuring he has a high ceiling with a college weight program.

totally understand your point.   recruiting in general will always be a crapshoot when evaluating 16-18 yr olds and projecting production few years down the line at college level.

unknown late offerees will always generate more skepticism than freak 5 stars given the hit or miss nature of recruiting - but harbaughs resume should demand confidence from the majority.

but russell wilson was a pro baseball draft pick, 2 sport star and all around tremendous athlete - hes dusting NFL safeties and LBs in space so while hes improved and grown, hes always been a sick athlete.  maybe this kid proves to be legit, ill defer to harbaugh, but i doubt he runs or throws darts like russell wilson

Carter's ball placement is impeccable. With a 74% completion rate, there's no way that arm stregnth is an issue. He is an accurate passer who can put a lot of touch on the ball, which prevents receivers from dropping the football. He doesn't have a rocket for an arm because he doesn't need to.

Beyond this, Carter looks off safeties and goes through his progressions better and faster than anyone on our current roster. This is a very smart quarterback because he just transferred for his senior season, and completely grasps his offense as his first year as a starter.

Your "competition" argument is questionable-- Malzone's competition was far worse and Carter put up far better numbers.

Measurables and flashiness don't make a solid quarterback. We all should know this by now. What does make a good quarterback is a selfless leader, and Carter's Andrew Luck-esque pancake @8:24 of his highlights shows that he is exactly that.

Maybe, just maybe, Harbaugh sees something in the kid and wants to visit him and talk about a few things. And maybe, just maybe, Harbaugh knows just a little bit more about scouting, watching film, recruiting, developing, and seeing the potential in raw talent. Yup, I think I'm going to go with Jim on this one. But you can talk down on the kid all you want... Maybe dropping a few more F bombs will help you really drive your point home.

The kid isn't rated because his film hasn't been evaluated by the recruiting sites, he didn't attend any camps, and had just transferred high schools for his senior year. All of these factors hampered him from getting noticed...

...until now.

Carter will soon be evaluated and rated on all 4 sites because Michigan, Florida (Nussmeier), and Texas Tech have all started to recruit him within the past week. You truly need to stop "star gazing," bud. Because you're a "star gazer," you're naturally wooed by things like measureables and arm strength. Fine, but other people can judge the quarterback position better than you can. I'm glad one of them is our head coach.

As for your "lobbing" argument: haven't you ever seen Philip Rivers or Peyton Manning play quarterback? Neither one of those quarterbacks has a rocket launcher for an arm, and yet they've both been successful. If your view on quarterback talent held true, then neither Rivers or Manning would be a successful quarterback in the NFL.

i see merit in some of your comments.   i did not watch the video so cant comment on his arm, but hopefully you understand arm strength matters to some degree right?

its not in top 5 of desirable attributes in QBs but arm strength is important.   touch, accuracy, mobility, will / ability to win and anticipation / football IQ are 5 off the top of my head more important but the kid cant have a wet noodle either.

as QBs move up competition levels, the windows tighten and decisions / actions must occur quicker - timing, anticipation and accuracy can offset the need for rocket arms but weak arms also limit the throws and route combos coaches can call.  if far sidelines, hard 22s, deap seems, etc are not really options then Ds press elsewhere and thats a problem.

so arm strength matters - again i didnt watch this kid and obviously defer to the pro harbaugh but even hell say some throws need zip especially in pro style offenses

Of course it matters, but arm strength isn't going to be an issue like the original commenter suggests. That commenter must be a "star gazer" with regard to recruits.

Anyhow, Carter slings the ball 40+ yards with a quick release several times during the video.

No he doesn't "sling" the ball 40 yards.  He lobs the ball about 30 yards, and his receivers frequently have to wait for it to catch up to him.  Honestly, did you even watch his video?

I don't know what you were watching but his arm strength looked fine. Some of his passes looked like they hung but only because he was putting touch on the ball. I thought overall his film looked great. He went thru his progressions, very accurate, moves good enough and puts touch on the ball. Looks like a good prospect for Harbaugh to coach up.

According to the Scout article linked upthread:

"Carter, who is originally from Gilmer, played his junior season at Salado in Central Texas. While the team had a tough year, Carter put up big numbers with 2,887 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, including one game with 613 yards and eight touchdowns. He moved back to Gilmer following the season."

If the team lost a bunch of games, that might explain his low recruiting profile going into his senior season.

I just watched his highlights again, and I think the notion that he's got a weak arm is ridiculous. He's throwing it 40 yards in the air on target without much apparent effort. I swear to God if Joe Montana was a HS senior some of you would be bitching about his arm strength.
