Harbaugh may get official credit for school's 1,000th win even if suspended

Sherrone Moore:

"I would say to me, and to everybody else, that would be his win. It wouldn't count as mine. He's the head coach of this football team and I'm just standing in there to make sure we don't mess it up."

TruBluMich had a post in mid-October about who was credited with the wins from the first 3 games. The acting coaches got credit, including Hart and JayBaugh each getting credit for one full win despite only coaching a half a game. As TruBluMich noted in their OP, the NCAA rules say the school can choose to attribute the win to the acting head coach or the actual head coach.

At the moment, according to the NCAA site, it appears that Jim Harbaugh was given credit for 7 wins this year, so that would include the Penn State game. I'm not sure if that's a final decision or if there is still a chance that would be awarded to Moore.

And because Michigan did it voluntarily in an attempt to get ahead of potential NCAA punishment, this is a small measure of contrition, whereas Michigan is fighting this with the Big Ten, so the school does not agree with the suspension, thus attributed to Harbaugh for the win.

I'm through the denial stage, and on record as thinking that this Stalions deal is a fuck-up, a bit of an own goal. You give people who hate you a reason to kick you, and they're going to kick. But I also think that, cumulatively, you can see how the U of M gets in people's craws. And I love it.

And this goes way back. In my family, back in the 60s, this stuff was huge. Every member of my immediate family went to Michigan, as did my gramps. The games were so big, Michigan's general dominance so secure, that you just casually checked in to beam about another win, or took a blanket and had a picnic coming and going from the entertainment. The family loved the story about how a then still very poor Tom Harmon's mom had once been their housekeeper. (My gramps was the superintendent of schools in Hamtramick, then--we were told--the biggest school system in the world; all of this was bound up with the emergence of a new middle class, and managerial class, that felt they had the keys to a better world; Jim continues to embody this very midwestern way of being.) There wasn't hateful antagonism of family members who ended up at MSU, or elsewhere; it was all one thing. (My dad went to Wayne State to teach out of the U of M.) But Michigan was the gold standard. The reigning power.

Here we are at a thousand wins. You don't think that ESPN, which doesn't own the B1G, isn't happy not to have to trumpet that with banner headlines? That other B1G members aren't delighted to take some air out of the triumphal balloon? Ha! Jim was marching to a g*t d*mned coronation this year, on the cusp of a model of steadily replicable success that people are/will struggle to derail. One way or a fuckinuther!

I'm not Niccolo Machiavelli, but I do think that Santa and Warde and Jim need to be strategic here, to protect and amplify this thing. Hell, I'm ambivalent about college football, tbh. Violent, unremunerated labor that tends to prey on the poor, all of that. But I do think that if you're going to play this game, you'd better play it right. We've got something big and important to protect here. This idea resonates for me, even when it is primitive: You come at the king, you better land that punch. Not often, not without elegance and poise, but we really need to see these guys punching back.

Also, it's important to remember that Harbaugh himself isn't suspended. The head coach is. The conference hasn't punished harbaugh himself, only the team (their words not mine). They have no justification for not giving him the wins should we win on Saturday.

I'd go the other way.  Let Ryan know that his record against Harbaugh will remain 1-2, no matter the outcome, unless Harbaugh is on the sidelines.

Edit:  ...obviously looking ahead to who we credit win 1001 to :)

It absolutely should go to Harbaugh. I could see him trying to deflect it and giving the credit to Moore, kind of like he does with postgame on-field interviews. But here the University should insist on attributing this to him. Think of all this man has done for the school, both as a player and a coach. Give him his due.

The only thing that matters is Michigan is gonna have 1,000 total wins this Saturday and NO ONE else can claim that.

We will always be the first to that milestone. Not OSU, not Alabama.

I remember win #900 against Sparty.  Brendan Gibbons kicked the game winning field goal and we won 12-10.

Win #800 was even more nerve wrecking against Wisconsin with Drew Henson making that crazy over the body throw to all that traffic in the end zone, David Terrell thankfully grabbing it.  Brent Musberger was screaming while the ball was in the air, “Dangerous pass!!!  Real dangerous!!!  Touchdown!!!” Probably one of the loudest non-rival moments ever at the big house.  Final score 13-10.

I hope this isn’t an omen. I don’t want any stressful heroics to get win # 1,000 this weekend.

Here is a 2012 article commemorating that 900th win and also a few other milestone victories.  A few of these (numbers 100 and 300) came during national championship years.

The 1932 team featured some notable MI legends such as Willis Ward, Gerald Ford and my son Jack!

There is absolutely no precedent for that.  In 2014, a Baylor assistant coach (not an analyst, an actual member of the coaching staff) attended an opponent's game in person.  He was given a half-game suspension.

The crazy thing about all this is that violating 11.6.1 is just considered a level II infraction - normally, the kind of thing that gets a couple sentences at the bottom of an article.  The OSU PR campaign has managed to amplify a trivial matter into a national news story.

Worth noting, when the B1G finally released the 2023 schedule, I asked the question when will Michigan get win #1000?

The “dare to dream” scenario had it at this week’s game (or last week’s if you want to round up). Whereas the expected value was next year’s Arkansas State game. Despite all the turmoil and angst from this “scandal,” we should appreciate what we’ve been enjoying these last two seasons. Truly wonderful.

This makes sense.  The Wise Men of the B1G have decreed that the Wolverines must play without their head coach on the sideline.  Hence Jim Harbaugh is still the head coach.

The only important thing is that Michigan get's credit for 1000 wins.

Who cares if it's Sherrone or Jim. Does a trophy get awarded or pay raise generated if they are in the coach's seat when the team registers win #1000? Do you remember who was the coach at #500? #100? Does it matter? Serious question.

I think if we make a show of who we are giving the credit to while Jim is suspended, it's about the statement more than the record books.

It seems possible (as of this moment) Jim already got the credit for Penn State and not Sherrone, which AFAIK was not announced or anything. So with this coming up as a question this week going into what should be win 1,000, it's also just part of our celebration for win 1,000.

Harbaugh probably doesn't care as long as the team gets the win - everyone knows who is putting in the work and the university will make sure that *they* (not just Harbaugh, but Moore, Minter, Hart and the rest - not to mention the kids themselves!) will be recognized and rewarded for it.

How can this be...I thought they were out to get Curt Flood Harbaugh? Isn't that why all have aligned against him? Can't just be because he's a quirky, competitive Boy Scout. For he's a jolly good fellow...come on B10, join in!

I haven't seen this posted anywhere on the boards yet and it didn't seem thread-worthy, so on the list of thing to credit Harbaugh for, add "inspiring a Zoomer to wear a shirt repping a 45-year-old Canadian folk song."

After Michigan's excruciating road win against Penn State last week, Wolverines receiver Cornelius Johnson explained why he wore an Edmund Fitzgerald t-shirt on the team's trip to State College.

“I know Coach Harbaugh said he used to listen to that song on the way to the stadium when he played,” Johnson told On3. He went on: "It might seem weird because it’s not the most hyped-up song, but everyone’s got their routine. It’s a funny song because it does relate to Michigan and that area, Lake Superior and all that. So, it was cool. Just good lyrics in that song. Just a fighting mentality. We’re the lake."

Hell yeah, buddy. (h/t David Roth at Defector)

I’m in the mindset that he should get credit for all the wins this season, being that he is head coaching during the practices and clearly his program. Although, I give Sherrone major kudos for what happened at Penn State.

Since we were allowed to give both Hart and JayBaugh 1 win each for the same game, seems like we should get to also give JimBaugh a win for all the games, as well.

And while we're at it, I would like credit for all 999 wins thus far, and none of the ties or losses, making my record 999-0, the winningest coach of all time.

I'd think Harbaugh is more concerned with getting that 11th win on Saturday than whether we chicken counters give him credit for any wins that haven't taken place yet.

The game still has to be played and not taken for granted.
