Co-signed 100%.

FWIW my late father served as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Corp and was stationed in Northern Italy.  He was actually served briefly under Patton in Selarno where the US troops first engaged the Germans and got our ass kicked (watch the movie Patton if you dont know).  He didn't like talking about it much but as he got older I realized with a few gin and tonics he'd open up a bit about his experiences there.

I asked him once if he'd do it again and he said "Donald - if I knew for sure I wouldnt get killed I'd do it again in an instant.  The most amazing experience of my life and nothing else was even close."

Thank you dad and thank you to all the veterans here on the board!  Have a gin & tonic on me today.

BTW - my wife taught me to say "thank you for your service" when I see a veteran wearing any sort of military wear.  Talk about something that costs you nothing and definitely brightens up a verterans day.  ALWAYS well-recieved.

Thank You. He's not wrong! Serving in the Army / Military Police in Iraq from 2005-2006 was the most taxing, amazing and hardest part in my life. With that said, I would do it all over. I miss proudly wearing that uniform. I miss the guys (brothers) and team I served with most of all.

Thank you to all that served and serve today. Your unselfish dedication by you and your families are appreciated.

My 69 year old dad's personal reflection (alum UM dental school '78).

"Veterans day is more important to me. As I get older one reflects on what I did or what I should have done different.

And my proudest achievement, after my 4 kids, is being a Lt. Cmdr in the greatest NAVY the world has ever seen."

Thank you vets. Enjoy your day.

Much thanks for all those who have served and are serving now - as well as their families!  We all would not have the freedoms we enjoy now without their service, sacrifices, and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice.

My great Grandfather served in the merchant marine.  He would tell stories of his time in the war sitting on the front porch as all his many grandchildren gathered while smoking his cigar and putting out the ashes on his metal leg he lost to a U-Boat.

I like the Commonwealth tradition of Remembrance Day/Armistice Day, focusing on the contributions of all the Allied powers especially since South Asian contributions to the Allied powers in World Wars have often been overlooked. My great-great-grandfather fought and died in the French battlefield as a solider in the British Indian Army with no promise or hope of Indian independence at the time. So I REALLY enjoyed the schadenfreude of England losing in the Euro final

You're welcome.

After being called a baby killer (and by the best kisser I ever experienced!), being thanked is definitely an improvement.

But be careful with the "Thankyouforyourservice" out in public. It can become rote, like "Haveaniceday," and sometimes even a bit self-congratulatory. Or co-opted by politicians who never served.

If you do say it, please make it personal, genuinely person to person.

You may be right, George. But at least hostility makes it clear what they think. Platitudes, not so much. Behind it could be anything, from deep respect through indifference to hidden hostility.

I guess it's clear from my returning to the subject, and replying to others, suggests I'm still working through what my service meant, to me, to those I served with, to other veterans, and to the country.

Aww, schucks...  Thanks!

My only regret from my Navy experience was being too friggen' immature to realize how much fun that job actually was.  I don't regret getting out or my life since then, but I wouldn't have exited had I been smart enough to figure it out.

One day I was ~15' below a Soviet submarine filming its keester, the next I was wondering how boring life could be.  Ahh, for the decisions we make...

I have several relatives who served in the Army and the Marines. But the one that goes back the furthest is my great x 4 grandfather, who served in Company C, 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Army of the Potomac, during the Civil War. He fought and was wounded on the first day's action at Gettysburg. It's his name that serves as my username.

While no picture of him exists, this monument in Reynolds' Woods serves as a good stand-in, and a salute to all who served.

Concordia University is hosting The Moving Wall today.  It is the half-size, very impressive replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.  Other exhibits are also on display.  How cool to see this at such a small college and a great lesson for the young students.

Ann Arbor had so many men who served in World War 2, many of whom are buried in Botsford Cemetery.  Most of them have passed on, but we have been the beneficiaries of so many good stories from the older gentlemen in that epic battle that truly saved our democracy.  My father-in-law was a Double-ace Pilot and Purple Star recipient in WW2.  The Yankee Air Museum in Belleville, which has all of his metals, is a wonderful place to visit for a few hours.

It was a great Veterans day for me! Like I said I avoided people and sat on my ass and played videogames, it was glorious! Happy Veterans day to all my fellow vets out there!

Thank you to all our vets. Every last one of you are far braver and have more cajones than I could ever hope to have.

Thank you for everything you sacrificed so the rest of us civilian schmucks can sit around and grovel about our football team on the internet.

Today is Remembrance Day. The most important conflict of the last 500 year ended on this day 103 years ago. It created monsters and heroes, destroyed old borders and created new ones, and tore down old orders and planted the seeds of news ones.Hitler, Lenin, and Churchill. Communism and Nazism. WWI made them all.

France lost 1.4 million men. Germany 2 million. Russia 2.7 million. Each nation WWI death toll equals or exceeds US death toll in all wars US has ever fought.

A better day to honor US veterans would  April 9th the date of when Lee surrendered at Appomattox. A very American event.

Marine here (was in Kaneohe Bay, HI for 9/11). Wife was in the army and 2 sons repped the Air Force and Navy. As much as I’ve loved my service, it’s the pride of my grandpa who wanted to serve and couldn’t that makes it feel like such a privilege. And, my other grandpa who served during WW2 and Korea after that showed me the importance.

Happy Veteran’s Day all!
