Greg Robinson's defense

Submitted by Korean Wolverine20 on
What kind of defense does Robinson run, Is it a 4-3 or a 3-4? Because he says he uses a DE/LB hybrid in his defense so it it a 4-3 with a DE/LB instead of a DE, a 3-4? Or is this question irrelevant and you dont care what scheme he uses as long as he teaches fundamentals liek tackling and scheme doesnt matter at all?

in his Defense. He uses the best scenario for the talent he has. He likes to use the strengths while hiding the weakness of the defense. He stated that the hybrid was just something he had and used it. He also stated that he wants to be able to run a three man front in some scenarios then be able to knuckle up and go with a four man front. Scheme isn't something he's set on.

He likes to use the strengths while hiding the weakness of the defense. This is a revolutionary tactic.

I posted a thread that has an interview with the guy. He explains his defensive philosophy in it. He talks about liking to be on the sideline as opposed to being up in the booth. He talks about going on the recruiting trail, how he got hired. Blah blah blah. If you want to know about him the link to the interview is on the thread.

and you have to match your personnel to their personnel, so the word "scheme" gets way too much play on message boards, etc. I think it's best to say that most D coordinators can run multiple fronts (i.e. 3-4, 4-3, 3-3, etc), but the personnel groups will be dictated by the scouting of the opponent's offense. I think it has gotten to the point in college ball that teams need to be versatile enough to play run heavy or spread teams and sometimes combinations of both offenses with differing personnel groups. I think GR said he needs to evaulate a little before he starts to implement a "scheme", but I would think he would run the 4-3 base with a 3 man line variant. If a team wants to run a true 3-3-5, I think you have to commit to it wholesale as the alignments, techiniques, resposibilities, etc., are vastly unique to that scheme and to which "school of thought" your coming from within the 3-3-5. There was a great article I posted a while back about the two types of 3-3-5 defenses, but my old school thinking makes me wish we never see them.

That is crazy when you think about it for a bit. I don't think that turnover happens at many top tier schools. I am surprised anyone knows where they are supposed to be. The advantage is time is the continuity of the position coaches. GRob better have some magic that allows people to "play fast" or whatever. I would be happy with "tackle slow" instead of "flail as he runs past you" or "take bad angles at a medium pace" or "be in the wrong place to have better viewing on the big screen as your man scores".

yea 4 out of 5 is pretty absurd. Hopefully G Rob can be here for a while. Obviously not a successful head coach. Shouldn't be a better college dc job unless its tennessee or usc where they will pay him 4x as much. It'd be nice if this hire pans out and he can put in a few years before retiring.
