Great question about sports allegiance involving Michigan

Submitted by MGoCooper on

I was asked a great question this morning by a co worker. Knowing that I'm a huge Michigan fan, he asked me what I'd rather have. A Lions Super Bowl win, Red Sox World Series championship, Red Wings Stanley Cup, Pistons NBA championship, or a Michigan national championship? I'd never even thought about it before, but without hesitation, I answered a Michigan national championship. Even though I'd love to see a Lions Super Bowl win, it just wouldn't compare to a Michigan championship. What are your thoughts?

1. Michigan wins Football Nat. Championship

2. Michigan wins Football Nat. Championship

3. Michigan wins Football Nat. Championship

4. Michigan wins Football Nat. Championship

5. Michigan wins Football Nat. Championsip

That would be 5 years straight of Michigan winning the Nat. Championship with Coach Hoke at the helm, Mike Hart as his RB coach (after Freddie J retires after the 2nd Championship) and Mr. Tom Brady as QB coach and his wife Gisele as recruiting coordinator.

I follow other sports; especially Michigan ones but to see the football team with multiple times and establish a dynasty would be amazing.

1a -Lakers world title

1b - Michigan football championship

2 - Michigan beating Ohio in The Game

3 - Michigan winning any other championship

4- Ohio St. losing at anything.

The Lakers are my first love as I grew up in L.A. and have been a Laker fan all my life - if you name a number from 1-55 I can probably tell you from memory at least Laker who wore it as his jersey number.  They only sink to 1a here because... we Laker fans have admittedly been spoiled for the last 30 years.  I understand if most other people here hate the Lakers, who are pretty much the Yankees of the NBA; but at least now we can all like them at least a little on account of Darius Morris.

Red Wings Stanley Cup and Michigan National Title.

I desperately want Michigan to win every game on Saturday but when it's playoff time I want the Cup equally as bad.  want   wa

Then Green Bay Packers, Michigan Hockey, and my high school football team winning states.

There's only one thing on your list that i've never seen before and that's a Lion's Super Bowl win so I've gotta go with that one.  I'm 52 and every other one of your wish list has been satisfied for me.

#1 - USA World cup

#2 - Michigan football TRUE National Championship (please god no more BCS)

#3 - Tigers World Series

#4 - Newcastle United win anything (Don't count winning the League Championship recently)

#5 - Red Wings win another cup

#6 - WMU Hockey wins national title (sorry, I am biased as a WMU grad and it's the only sport they seem to perform well in)

#7 - UM Hoops title

#8 - Lions Super Bowl

top two.  Altough I am slightly more passionate about Michigan football than the USMN(soccer)T, the USA winning the world cup would be a bigger deal for me.  Michigan has a history of college football success (winningest program, national titles, Heisman winners, and many more), but the USA winning the world cup seems just out of this world.  Only EIGHT countries have ever won a tournament that starts off including hundreds.

Except I just root for the NFL team with the most Michigan players in each match up. But I'd take a Michigan MNC #1, Pistons #2, Red Wings #3, Red Sox #4.

is the only championship I haven't seen. I always tell my wife that I will stop watching sports when it happens because my sports world will be complete. (I may have to change that to - I can now die happy.)

I've seen the Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons win championships. I've seen Michigan win it all in football, basketball and hockey.

I've got this down to math:

For ONE Michigan National Championship I would happily trade:

  • Any TWO Tigers World Series victories
  • Any THREE Red Wings Stanley Cups
  • Any FOUR Lions Superbowls
  • The existence of the Pistons.
  • Justin Verlander or Miguel Cabrera and a pitching prospect
  • Henrik Zetterberg

Even further:

For ONE Michigan win over Ohio State I would trade:

  • Any one playoff round for the Tigers (e.g. I'd trade them losing the ALCS to beat Ohio State)
  • Any one playoff round for the Red Wings.
  • Any 16 Lions games (i.e. if M beats OSU and the Lions go 0-16 this is a good trade)
  • Any two losses to Michigan State
  • Any three losses to Notre Dame
  • Any four losses to another team (so 8-4 with a victory over OSU is a slightly more fulfilling season to me than 12-1 with a loss to OSU, unless we play OSU again that year. 1995 is more fulfilling thant 2006. Weird right? Well would your rather watch the Biakabutuka video or see the pic of Morelli right now?)
  • Alex Avila and a player to be named later
  • Johann Franzen

For ONE Michigan win over MIchigan State I would trade:

  • Any two playoff games for Tigers or Red Wings
  • The Lions making the playoffs.
  • Michigan making the NCAA tournament in basketball
  • Winning just 1 of the next 3 games versus Notre Dame.
  • Austin Jackson/Victor Martinez and future considerations
  • Valterri Filpulla and Jimmy Howard

1. Michigan national championship.

2. Bears Super Bowl

3. Arsenal wins the Premier League.

3b. Arsenal wins the UCL. Not even likely, that's why it's low.

4. Cubs World Series

5. Red Wings Stanley Cup (Yes I know. It's the one time I deviate from Chicago, but I HATE the Blackhawks). Also, I'd probably have this up higher but I've seen the Wings win 4 Stanley cups already. Nobody alive has seen the Cubs win the World Series. And the Bears were SO close my freshman year.

6. Bulls win NBA title(s).

7. Michigan hockey national championship.

8. Michigan bball wins tourney.

9. Tennessee Vols win national championship

1) Michigan football
2) Pistons
3) Lions
4) Michigan basketball
5) My yahoo! fantasy teams

I don't really care about hockey or baseball on any level.  They were the only two sports that were available to me that I didn't play (basketball, football, soccer, wrestling, track, volleyball, tennis, swimming) so I just can't relate.

1. Michigan men's basketball national championship (yep, above football for the simple reason that I was a bit too young to remember anything about '89 yet I did have '97. My earliest major sports memories were the '92 and '93 championship games, which were extremely painful. It would also feel a bit more satisfying as a fan since I believe that real Michigan people all support the basketball program while football fandom will always see you rubbing elbows with a segment of both unlikeable elitists and some bandwagon-jumping undesirables).

2. Michigan football national championship

3. Tigers World Series

4. Lions Super Bowl

5. Pistons NBA Championship

6. Arsenal wins the UEFA Champions League (a fellow Gooner above had winning the EPL above this. CL would be a bigger thrill to me not just due to the competition level but also since it is settled in one epic game unlike a domestic championship which can often be seen coming down the pike for weeks if not months).

That is the full list of sporting events that would cause me to cry, get drunk, cry again and call in to work the next day.
