Gelen Robinson ('14 LB) to Purdue

Submitted by MLaw06 on

GRIII's brother, Gelen Robinson, committed to play football at Purdue.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Gelen excels on the football field, where he had 13 sacks and five forced fumbles last season for Lake Central (Ind.) High School. He also won a state wrestling title and finished second in the shot put at the state track and field finals.

Robinson -- whose brother Glenn Robinson III plays basketball at Michigan -- was also being recruited by Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and others. But Hazell went after him hard, and he's a guy the Boilers needed to reel in given the legacy connection.

We didn't "snake oil" anyone away from Purdue last year, perhaps Brady could flip Robinson late in the process if other players fall thourgh. Even if they don't fall through, it would be a little nostalgic if he were to flip him just for the fun of it.

I remember there being a ton of excitement for him earlier in his HS career, and a lot of people being pretty pumped for him to eventually join his brother on campus. But then I totally forgot about him as the hype seemed to die down. Did he not progress as much as people expected? He seems a little smaller than I expected him to be (I thought he was expected to be DL, not LB, for instance).

Like Farnn said, it has mostl to do with his size.

A Rivals analyst, (Helmholdt, I think) said that "Gelen is going to be one of those players who are going to end up really productive in college."

When I read that the first names that came to mind were Kerrigan and Short.

His talents fit much better at WDE, but his size makes him more of a LB. At Michigan he really didn't have a good fit because Michigan wants their SAM to be similar in size to their WDE, which Robinson wasn't. So he's kind of a tweener that doesn't have a real defined position at this time.

I wouldn't mind Michigan offering a guy like Robinson late in the process or if there's a departure, but I don't think he's the type of guy you offer when Malik McDowell and Da'Shawn Hand are still on the board. If this were another year, Robinson might have received an offer by now.
