Gabe Newburg medically retired (per WTKA)

According to MLive and WTKA, Gabe Newburg has medically retired.

Always hate hearing this kind of thing - hopefully it is "only" a football medical issue and won't impact Gabe in terms of his long term health.  Been a tough year for this kid losing his dad a few months back and now having to retire.

Best of luck to him and his family.  Great that he will still be able to finish his degree - I certainly hope this allows him enjoy success in whatever field he chooses.

That's rough news. I always worry about these late summer medical retirements because it smells like something Saban would do.

For those counting at home, Michigan is still one scholarship over the limit (that we know of).

While I am all on-board with maintaining the "M doesn't do that kind of SEC stuff" aura around the program, M has done this several times recently.  (Ondre Pipkins and Ben St. Juste are the first that come to mind.)

This may very well be the M medical staff being more cautious than other schools against possible long-term injuries as in both the mentioned cases it seemed like a player Michigan could have used --- for depth at a minimum..

In any event the tarnish of this really has lessened (imo) with the expanded transfer options available today.  During the Saban "freak medical bad luck streak" at 'Bama those kids had to suck it up and give up football or lose their now-academic scholly.

Sorry, this is not the same thing. Pipkins and St Juste were not pushed out because they could not play. We were DESPERATE for players in their position when they left. If they could have played at all, they would have been welcomed.

This is not the same thing as Alabama processing players out because there are better options available. There may have been cases like that at Michigan, but Pipkins and St Juste ain't it.

Concurring with Gameboy.

You're comparing Apples (what we did with Pipkins, St. Juste), to ROTTEN Apples (what Saban did and does).

Just because they chose to get a 2nd opinion and went on to have success elsewhere does NOT mean they were processed the same way Satan does.

I like to think we try to think of the long-term future of our athletes, which in many cases will not (and in some SHOULD NOT) include football.

Ok, your curt dismissal of losing a player who went on to become All-Conference (not sure if 1st team, but he was a 3rd rd pick!) because they sought "a 2nd opinion" & those Doctors determined he could indeed play, is a story that's been ignored too much in these parts.

Let's assume all Michigan's intentions were honorable & player health focused - our medical staff botched this, to Michigan & the player's detriment! How is that not a bigger story?

What if it had been a QB rather than a CB? Espn would be all over that story - the freep as well!

Best of luck and health to you Gabe, very glad you got to live your dream of wearing the Winged Helmet on the Michigan Stadium playing field.

Forever a Michigan Man, may you use your degree to achieve greatness!

Really hope the medical issue is strictly football related and doesn't significantly impact the other aspects of his life.  Best of luck to Gabe and thanks for wearing the winged helmet.
