He took over for a team that went 0-16 and went to the playoffs three years later. With the talent they had they should have been competing for the playoff every year after that. That they didn't isn't necessarily on the GM. He was also adept at trading and in acquiring late round draft picks (his first move was trading Roy Williams for a 1st and 3rd round pick). He had some bad picks but some really good ones too. His top draft picks were never busts (word still out on Ebron).
On the other hand, I was perplexed that the organization didn't clean house after 2008 and he never would have had the job if it were up to me. What they're doing now by cleaning house is 8 years too late.

I just logged in to give Wayne State some love and mention Martin Mayhew comes from the Matt Millan tree of "excellence". If Matt Millan thinks you are good at your job, you probably need to find a new job. Good luck to the New York football giants.

As a Lions fan since my birth I'm going to reserve judgement simply because of the sad fact that he is probably one of the better GM's we have had. We made the playoffs twice in 8 years! He made a couple good draft picks in 8 years!

and I agree with you that he was one of the better GM's the Lions have had. That is exactly why I can never love the Lions the same way I do Michigan, the Tigers, or the Red Wings. They never give me any hope that things will change for the better. I hope this new guy from the Patriots changes that.

The NFL gives people with mediocre records second chances all the time. Maybe he'll do better this time around.

I didn't support the hire. How can a team promote from within an organization that went 0-16? I think he only had 1 winning season. Almost 40% of NFL teams go to the playoffs so with all those top picks we, the Lions, should've gone to the playoffs. Its set up for losing teams to get top picks. The Suh thing will always be on his resume too. How can you let a guy like that get away?
IMO, you could have set the Lions draft on Auto-draft like some fantasy leagues and done way, WAY better.
I'm sure he has some football knowledge and maybe some team will find it, because it ain't being a GM.

I cannot wait to hear Valenti's take on this tomorrow.

Stating the obvious: This is a HUGE upgrade and promotion for Mayhew over working for the Fords.

...Mayhew will help assistant general manager Kevin Abrams on all aspects of the salary cap, CBA compliance and player contract negotiations. He will also handle special projects as assigned by general manager Jerry Reese.
It doesn't sound like he'll be involved in drafting players, so, yay, I guess?

He has no idea how to hire coaches, but he has some value strictly as a talent evaluator. He built an incredibly dominant defense, one that could have made a serious playoff push if he hadn't hampered the offense with his coaching choice.
He hit well on the d-line in drafts, and that's what New York is going to focus on. He's not terrible in free agency, and as long as he has nothing to do with coaches it will be hard for him to fuck up that badly. He definitely deserves a job in the league, just not running the Lions. The bozo he left behind coaching the team is a different story, but he'll get his soon

The Giants have been a pretty solid franchise in my lifetime. This leads me to believe that they saw Mayhew perform reasonably well for a franchise that is the legitimate poster child of organizational dysfunction. They'll all be fine.
