Father's Day Thread

I only wanted one thing for Father's Day. To go to the lake and watch the sunrise on my kayak. And the heavens did not disappoint (image is from 5:45 this morning in Pinckney). Now the brisket is on the smoker. What are your plans today? Your menu?

Beautiful picture, Brutus!!!  I'll be spending some time with the new grill I gifted myself.  Have baby backs, pork belly burnt ends, baby potatoes, corn cobs, and bourbon apple pie lined up for it today, all to be smoked with apple wood.  I hope I can make it all taste as good as it sounds!

Happy Father's Day to all!!

That is an amazing picture, sir!  Reminds me of my family's place in Northern Michigan just NW of Cadillac.  Serene, peaceful... thanks for sharing.  Really starting my day off right.

As for today: Steaks and grilled potatoes and onions later in the day.

We got a lake house 6 years ago & it was probably the best thing we have ever done.  As it turns out, it's a way better financial investment than our primary residence, & the relaxation & family memories are priceless.  Good luck with your search.

If you plan on renting it out to cover some (or all) of the expenses, beware that each little twp. can have their own short-term rental ordinances.  And they can change them any time they want without any grandfathering.

EYB, forgot to comment on the cool pic.  can't believe you didn't take a fishing rod, or maybe you did?

when i was younger we used to call ishpeming, 'home of the odd and the ugly' (that's some yooper snobism there).  in the UP they aren't called cottages, they are 'camps'.

Ya know I didn't take my rod but I'm wishing I had. I saw some bass jump and that lake is also good for pike.

And now that you mention it my aunt and uncle only refer to their cottage as the "camp." I had no idea that was a yooper thing. My aunt was born and raised there, and even has that Yooper accent (she sounds a bit like Marge Gunderson when she talks) and they have a sauna right on the beach.

And that's a hilarious nickname. Fun fact: Jimmy Stewart's Anatomy of a Murder was filmed there, but I'm sure you knew that ;)

jimmer, from negaunee, in his 70's.  a great guy.  fun to have someone nearby who knows all the same places (and more) that i do, has hunted them or had a beer in the same bar, etc.  he is exceptional in his yooper history, too.

My daughter has Covid-19 so I can't see her. But we're very close so this is only a temporary setback. She got it about 10 days ago and she no longer has fevers so she is on the upswing.  She gave me the best gift by recently graduating with two BS degrees, and starts her new job in 2 months, so I am very proud.

Having my 91.5 year old father (U-M class of '49) over for dinner along with my wife, kids (son is U-M class of '23) and a few other family members. We are fortunate that he is is healthy enough to drive over and can continue to live on his own in the house in which I grew up!

Hoping the predicted storms will hold off as we are eating outdoors...which still feels like the safer option these days.

Happy Father's Day to all of the MGoDads!

Wow thats a fantastic picture.

Will be chilling today and maybe going for a swim. Then I’ll be back where I belong.  On my deck with my smoker and grill chugging along. Dinners gonna be a smoked ribeye, chimichurri shrimp, grilled asparagus and some sort of potato that is TBD.

My best friend loves Indian cooking but basically couldn't do it after he had kids because of the obscene time commitment. He LOVES this instant-pot Indian cookbook (instant-pot Indian is apparently huge among the diaspora) because he thinks it's delicious + very, very low effort and the few times I've had food from it I've been thoroughly impressed.

Happy father's day! I hope you all get some aftershave and then participate in some sort of backyard sporting event where either a window gets broken or someone takes a hard croquet ball in the shin. Be careful out there!

Fathers day starts with 2 cups of coffee and then grocery shopping. Same as any other Sunday.  My son and I just shared a half a can of spam. WTF? We needed something to tide us over for the gathering at my dad's in a few minutes. We will have Vitale's Pizza and cake, starting to move up the food chain. Then off to the Notre Dame loving in laws -  whoo boy - I best behave.

NY Strip Steak cooked on the grill to end the day.

It’s funny that my mama-in-law chooses which restaurant we attend. I guess her choice for mother’s day is insufficient opportunity to demonstrate power. I’d sure like to ago elsewhere, but I guess I have no choice in the matter.

I already got my Father’s Day gift on Saturday. Our offer on our dream house was accepted.  3 acres in the country, lots of woods to play in, and hardwood/granite/stainless everything.  Remote controlled digital shower with 6 shower heads in the master. Didn’t even know that existed.

To celebrate I went and played golf and ended up shooting a 10 over 82 with a couple birdies ... then drank PBR all night.

So far, I have all of zero plans.  Lay on the couch and watch golf I guess

My son is coming over for dinner which will be a grilled-roasted beef tenderloin with chermoula sauce.  Christmas dinner in the summer.  Wife making bananas foster crepes for dessert.  I expect I’ll be getting a Michigan themed cloth mask as a gift after commenting on the need for game day essentials in the days of COVID-19.

Finally received my new burner for the grille. Nearly 20 years old and looking great. Gave it it's annual cleaning a couple weeks ago but the new burner took 3 weeks to arrive. Ready to fire it up today, probably some NY strips. (Grilled a couple Koegels yesterday, just to make sure it worked). Beer, bourbon and steak?.

Homemade chicken shawarmas from the pressure cooker (beer base) with garlic spread with cilantro from LeSaj.  Wife adds  a little dill pickle & feta on authentic saj bread.

White cheddar crackers & hummus for openers.

I am a lucky man!

Late to the thread but just got back from swimming in Pinckney( biking in Chelsea). What lake  Brutus( in the chain)?  ... I’m guessing Portage- 2nd guess Half moon. I prefer swimming in Pickerel. No fathers day plans - would be surprised if I even got a text from my progeny.

typical sunday: chores, church, chow.  family is scattered about gathering or making me gifts of various sorts.  twins in the barn using tools, could be very interesting.

i see a nap and then a swim in my future.  can't cut hay today as my haybine took another dump on me late yesterday.  oh, woe is me.

Family came over and my mother in law made a whole bunch of salt and pepper fried crab. Need to make a run to bass pro later.  Will probably order pizza for dinner.
