Jumbo was the most tenacious player I ever played with. He was the very definition of a road grater with a nasty streak a mile long. Off the field, he'd walk around with his head phones in, listening to the heaviest of metal, and not say too many words. He was a cool cat. Messner was was an odd duck but a hell of a football player. I bet he couldn't bench 225 but he had thick thighs, great instinct, and a motor that never stopped. Anderson was a few years younger then me but you could tell, even as a freshman, he had all the ability in the world. He was a cocky SOB as a frosh, but he could back it up. I'm very happy for all 3 of these guys.

isn't a 1st ballot unanimous choice, then nobody is.  Ever.

One of my all-time favorite Michigan defenders, he was just about as dominant up front as Charles was in the backfield.  Messner simply blew up plays at and behind the LOS at a rate I've never seen matched at Michigan.

Two of the more humble and down to earth players I had the privilege to know in South Quad. I am thrilled that they have the opportunity to be honored in this way.

One day a batter crushed it to deep right center. Gillette took off, ball well over his head. Playing 2B, I positioned myself to spot the throw to third. The batter didn't understand the ability of Mike. He grabbed the ball, whipped it thru the cut off (me as I ducked to save my life from a ridiculously fast throw, never more than 6' off the ground), perfect strike to Messner, who grabbed it, tucked it into his mit and waited.

The batter thought it an easy HR until he ran smack into a grinning Mark Messner (damn he had s wicked smile under that 'stache), who unbeknownst to the batter already had the ball. Bounce is generous, Mark didn't flinch when the batter ran into and was flattened by one of the greatest linebackers to ever wear the Maize and Blue.

Mark smiled, Mike smiled, I smiled at my luck at playing with two fine gentleman... Ah, Ann Arbor.
