The reason I went to UM was Bob Ufer, not the great Engineering School. I still get goose bumps listening to him. I cried at the Big House when he led the band from the press box to play "the Victors" knowing he was very ill (he died 11 days later).

WTKA will rebroadcast Ufer's broadcast of the 1979 revenge win over MSU, who the previous year ruined my Homecoming with Eddie Smith and Kirk Gibson's heroics. They will even replay the old commercials from 1979!

God Bless His Cotton pickin' Maize and Blue Soul!

On the goose bumps.  I still feel it too

In life you remember the people that made you feel happy the way Bob Ufer did

As a 22 year old I never had the pleasure of listening to him live but his voice was still one of my childhood memories thanks a a cd my dad had which had some music on it but had a few sound clips of Ufer and some basketball calls from '89. I wish I still had that cd.

But how long until us young guys get to have these memories with our radio guy??

I always turn it on for "just a few minutes" for some nostalgia and I will suddenly realize an hour has gone by. He had a way of drawing you in like no one else. His clever descriptions made his broadcasts very entertaining. Obviously I was not alive when he was around but sometimes I find myself wishing he was still here to call certain games (can you imagine Ufer calling Braylonfest?)

Today I learned Michigan had a QB named BJ Dickey. Seriously though, I love listening to old radio broadcasts of sporting events. Commentators seemed so much better back in the day, including tv announcers because most had the radio background. There are still some good ones but there are so, so many bad ones.

Oh, yeah. B.J. Dickey was on that team in 1979. I can't remember if he played in that Michigan State game, but maybe we'll get to hear Ufer call his name. (This was my sophomore year at U-M.)

The 79 season is most famous for the John Wanger-to-Anthony Carter pass against Indiana, but the season ended in terrible fashion, with the loss to Lawrence Taylor and North Carolina in the Gator Bowl. Wangler got hurt in that game, and Dickey came off the bench to lead the Wolverines to the loss. He was Bellomy-esque.

Per the stats archive's numbers for this game, B.J. Dickey was 8-13 for 147 passing yards and 2 passing TD. On the ground, Stanley Edwards ran for 139 yards on 24 carries, but it was one Butch Woolfolk who accounted for the sole rushing touchdown in the game somewhere in his 20 yards and 9 carries. Both Dickey and Wangler had some minor contributions to the ground game themsleves.

I, sadly, am too young to have heard Ufer live. I was born in '82 but instead grew up with my Dad talking about him and his memories growing up listening to him while working on my Grandpa's celery farm. Despite never hearing him live, Ufer's legacy, at least for me, lives on through our connection. Thanks, Bob,

One thing I remember that started me as a Michigan fan, when I was a kid it was a Michigan bye week, a replay of a Ufer era game, I was hooked. Can't believe I may have missed it tomorrow...

He's doing the pregame show, just got done interviewing Bo, and now telling old tales of Michigan and Bennie Oosterbaan vs. State and Biggie Munn.  Just some great stuff, "Man's inhumanity to man"!

Wonder if Brandy could go down the line and rapid-fire name every guy lined up on kickoff coverage.

Also, love that the level of excitement for Sheikh kicking a freaking touchback is exactly the same as a touchdown.

This IS a lot of fun to listen to.  His command of language has never been equalled!

96 yards down the field in E. Lansing.. way to go BJ Dickey

edit:  Before anyone freaks out, I meant his command of language in his profession..

The one thing I remember about 1979 other than Wangler to Carter against Indiana was that the kicking game cost us a couple of games that year.

I listened to a large part of the broadcast today, while I was cleaning the garage. What a great broadcast. What a great game. BJ dickey was tremendous. Salvatore Votale was tremendous. Go blue!,
