Director's Cup update

Submitted by rposly on May 27th, 2021 at 5:08 PM

On Monday, the Director's Cup announced that they're (finally) moving forward with 2020-21 standings and awards, at least for D1 and NAIA.  The Fall and Winter standings will be posted on June 3, and the Final results on July 2.

But fear not, MGoLoversOfTheDirectorsCup!  You don't need to wait!  I decided a few weeks ago to recreate their methodology and calculate the standings for them.  There were some glitches this year (e.g., some championships went with fewer teams than usual, Fall championships were held after Winter, etc.), but I think I've come very close to what their official standings are going to show.

The Final Winter standings will have Michigan #1, with 639.5 points, thanks to strong showings in Women's Gymnastics (National Champs!), Men's Gymnastics (3rd), Men's Basketball (5th), Wrestling (5th), Women's Swimming & Diving (6th) and many more.

After Winter:

  1. Michigan 639.5
  2. Minnesota 453
  3. Ohio State 451.5
  4. Alabama 435.17
  5. Stanford 431

Michigan then really slipped in the Fall, finishing 33rd with just 130 points.  2nd place in Women's Field Hockey wasn't enough to overcome the zeros in things like, ahem, Football, Soccer, etc.

After Fall/Winter:

  1. Stanford 770
  2. Michigan 769.5 (are you kidding me??)
  3. North Carolina 696.5
  4. Ohio State 655.5
  5. Kentucky 626.5

So far, Michigan is showing well in Spring, but this is the time when sunnier schools shine, with sports like Water Polo, Beach Volleyball, and Tennis.  Stanford already has 59 points on us, so it's going to be tough, but if there's ever a year to beat them, this is probably it.

Again, my rankings will almost certainly hold, but my exact point totals may be slightly different from what NACDA releases next week.  If anyone is interested, I could put my sheet up on Google.  Also, keep in mind that the final standings only include 19 sports, so some lower-scoring ones may ultimately get thrown out for various teams.  For instance, M and Stanford are already scoring in 15 sports.

Well done.

My personal view on this is football and basketball should count for zero in the standings as those programs have their own rewards for success.

Still a great showing.

Well, likely OP cares.  jbrandimore cares. Probably the people that do “Directors Cup stuff” as a living care as well. Stanford does I’m sure. And that’s off the top of my head with 4 fingers of Jefferson’s Reserve already down while my wife finished ribs.

Prolly lots of other people care too.

Sports left in Spring and Michigan's placement vs. Stanford's. Basically, we're not going to win b/c Stanford pretty much owns spring and country club sports.

Rowing seeds: I Eights (3 Stanford, 5 Michigan); II Eights (4 Stanford, 5 Michigan); Fours (1 Stanford, 3 Michigan).

Michigan is very strong, but apparently Stanford is slightly stronger. Championships are this weekend, May 28-30. GO BLUE!

Women's Lacrosse: Stanford made the tourney, so they should get some points. Michigan did not make the tourney.

Men's Lacrosse: Michigan did not make the tourney, Stanford doesn't have a team.

Men's Tennis: Michigan lost in the first round, Stanford lost in the second round and should score more points.

Women's Tennis: Michigan lost in the third round, Stanford lost in the second round. Michigan should score more points.

Men's Golf: Neither Michigan nor Stanford made the championships.

Women's Golf: Michigan made it to the championship field of 24 teams, but couldn't make it to the match play round. Stanford made it to match play (final 8 teams) and lost immediately. They still get more points.

Softball: Michigan lost in the regionals (first round, basically) to Washington. Lame. Stanford also lost in the regionals, so it's a wash, I think.

M/W T&F: No idea, but it looks like Stanford has historically placed higher than Michigan in both.

Baseball: Apparently, Stanford is really good at baseball too. Bastards.

And now I've wasted way too much time on this.

Very thoughtful words, Geubux, and with all sincerity, please know that when that small (but just big enough) meteor annihilates Columbus (God willing) that you, your loved ones and perhaps at least 3 (but not more than 6) other "good" Buckeyes are spared through (what would clearly have to be) Divine Mercy.

Peace Be With.  (Much of the time.)

Actually Michigan will score more points in  Softball than Stanford...by advancing to regional final they will finish tied for 17th in NCAA while Stanford will finish tied 33rd...Track will score points to M and W..Water Polo will finish tied for 5th so not that much difference...We are right in the Hunt for the title
