Derrick Walton Jr.'s Incredible Game-Winning Assist Tonight
With more than half the team out for COVID, Derrick Walton Jr. is making the most of his opportunity with the Pistons. He had a career-high 11 points tonight as the Pistons beat the Spurs, but the coolest thing was this pass on the game-winning three by Saddiq Bey.

Walton Jr. has always been dangerous in the painted area. That was beautiful!

Just how they drew it up.

Just to be clear about how decimated the Pistons were, 12 of the 15 players on the roster weren't available.
Walton played real well tonight. Hopefully some team picks him up full time.

They might, and they might not; I'm really, really happy for guys like Walton who get some serious NBA time in what are some pretty lousy circumstances for a lot of players. It's not optimal, but guys like this getting to play are a real silver lining.

Excellent point - many NBA dreams are coming true. These experiences are, at the very least, priceless life memories for these young men.

Yeah well on the flipside, fans aren’t exactly getting a discount on inflated ticket prices (or advertisers on rates) to see replacement-level guys who otherwise would never be in the league. We pay to see Steph and Bron, not Bobby Nobody. Its not like G League games are must-watch TV … for a reason.

That was a fantastic game! After a nip and tuck first quarter, the Spurs pulled to a 16 point lead and looked well on their way to duplicating their big win against us last week, but the Pistons FOUGHT. Yeah, they're mostly bench players and G-league, but they played hard and they played good. By the middle of the third quarter, they came all the way back. It was back and forth the rest of the way, both teams playing like it was the playoffs. The fans were into it. The game went into overtime; if you want to see good basketball, check that game out, it was great!

Did they think Covid might not play a factor when they bought tickets?

Great pass. But also, that's a pretty crazy shot. Nice.
Thanks for posting this.

Pretty wild to see how well Franz has been playing for the Magic. 38 pts the other night. Being mentioned for Rookie of the Year at this point.

Awesome game! Fun to see D-Walt outduel MSU alum Bryn Forbes. As you said, Walton Jr had 11 pts, but also added 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals (!) The ball was in his hands all night, and he played with heart and grit. Hope it leads to more NBA opportunities for him.

Nutmeg dime!

Exactly how they drew it up, I presume.
Congrats to Walton on getting to play meaningful minutes in the NBA even if it might not be long. Still one of the ballsiest shooters on those Beilein teams.

Walton should insist Jakob Poeltl change his name to POE-LOL. That's a hell of a nutmeg.

I haven't seen the games, but the box scores during this stretch have been bonkers.
Hamadou Diallo played 50 minutes (and got up 32 shots)
Luka Garza led the team in +/- with +15 in 40 minutes while putting up 20 and 14
Bey had an off shooting night (other than the game winner) but played 47 and grabbed 17 boards.
Walton played 40 minutes
The current deep bench is not anywhere close to NBA quality, they got abused by the Knicks bench the other day, leading to the starters playing insane minutes.
Former Badger and Buckeye Micah Potter made an appearance
