Death = Cone juking Brown for 50
I would really appreciate some more details around this one. I have read that Cone juked Brown and then rambled for a 50 yard pick up. I understand the limited contact deal and that I am sure the Coner can run. However, reading that made me break out in a sweat thinking about the possibilities of an opponent that is more agile than the Coner in the open field with Brown. I really hope it was a cut back lane, bad footing or anything besides "he has not improved since last year". I do not want to see the kid leave M as an enigma
a great move.
It was an option play where Brown, in his new role as linebacker, didn't appear to believe that Cone would run it. Let's just hope he learns to just take the opportunity to smoke a quarterback in the future.

and that is how I saw. Brown seemed to let up not wanted to "smoke the QB" and Cone just cut behind him. If it were an actual game I would believe Brown would have lit him up. Hopefully

Stevie knew that Cone will most likely never see game action so he gave him a chance to do his "thang" on the field like he does on the mic (or more like Clemon's cam corder).
If Brown could have lit Cone up he would have. The qbs in the scrimmage were off limits. BTW, has anyone read Cone's stats in high school? I think he went to something like three consecutive Georgia state championships and lost only twice during his career as a starter. He's also a world class rapper.
Even if he couldn't "blow him up", he should not have been twisted like a pretzel by Coners "move"

Cone was running to the right and Brown was containing. Cone cutback and ran for 50 yards because Brown had no one behind him to back him up.
Agreed...It looked to me that Brown was containing the outside and there should have been an Inside Linebacker or Safety to clean up.

a friend of mine said he watched the tape over and cone did a pump fake to the right or something then cut back upfield to the left. that coupled with brown probably playing back a little allowed cone to take off

David Cone has a 100% completion percentage in games. Stevie clearly feared the long TD pass.

it's obvious that the D will be unstoppable this year because coner threw incomplete passes. no other team forced him to do that
And with mad defensive skills like that, we've got the next 15, maybe 16 NC's wrapped up already.
I know that I personally would fear the threat of the pass against a qb with a career rating of 276.40, but maybe that's just me.

After watching the play again, Cone would have been flattened if he weren't off limits.
If the coner is live he gets lit the fuck up.

If you're looking for "Deaths"
All eleven defenders crowding around and not being able to tackle Kevin Grady on a half back dive as they only momentarily held him up for a 20 yard trot into the endzone was a palm to the forehead moment.
I'm not a huge Stevie Brown backer, but Cone's run was a) a good play by Cone and b) a product of the situation. If the hitting was live, I'm pretty sure Brown would have run full-speed into the QB (in this case, Cone). When you get guys used to laying off the QB, this is the type of thing that can happen.
On a slightly related topic, I was impressed that Cone was able to gain as many yards as he did. He's not fleet of foot at all, but he looked quicker than I expected from a guy who's 6'7" and 225 or so.
Stevie Brown was given the most improved upperclassman award by the coaches at the end of spring practice.
I've knocked SS #3 as much as the next poster, but if the coaches gave him that recognition, it at least means one of the following things:
- He got significantly better (perhaps due to the new position)
- It's a B.S. award to give a senior confidence
- All the other upperclassmen improved so little that Stevie's minuscule improvement merited the award
- RR has been reading MGoBlog boards so much that the minute he saw S. Brown step on the field without managing to trip on his shoelaces and blow out Graham's knee or something, he thought it such an improvement over past performance as to be deserving of the most-improved honor.
Stevie Brown was in position to make the play, but could not escape the fact that he is Stevie Brown.
I remember as a safety the most frustrating thing in practice is going live with QBs (and RBs in our case) being off limits. As a DB its pretty hard to square up for a tackle while still being able to not make a big hit, especially when flying up from a drop. It often results in the DB looking much worse, just because you're asking them to make a tackle and not hit the ball carrier...One of those many contradictions of football practice.

If he was supposed to tackle but not "light up" the coner, than this would have made sense, but it was actually a simple touch that would have led to the Coner's play being stopped. Not two hands, just a simple touch. Half of Tate's run would have been double the yardage had it even been two hand touch.
As for SB being most improved, it's kind of like the kid in school who got a 1.4 in the first semester than improved to a 2.6 and he was "most improved" but still not good

Believe it or not, bad players are capable of making good plays. Just like Stevie Brown had a few picks last year, David Cone actually made a good play there. Get over it.

If you're flying up and you know you can't tackle the QB but he makes a pump fake to a guy near you, you're much more likely to go for the guy you're actually allowed to tackle. And who the hell would expect David Cone to run the ball, anyway? This really isn't a big deal. We're talking about a guy failing to make a tackle...on a guy he's not allowed to tackle.

I find it quite fitting that Brown now knows how it feels when the person playing behind him hangs him out to dry. I can't help but feel that a couple of the corners he has done the same thing to are laughing about it today.
It is interesting that this play involved the two candidates for the MRP (Most Ridiculed Player) award. Brown is now "most improved," and Cone really doesn't look any worse than Threet did last year. Actually, Cone reminds me of Threet without the sidearm motion or the nervous twitches.

Threet was a good deal better than Cone. My girlfriend could eat a whole hot dog in the time it takes him to deliver the ball, and my girlfriend's anorexic.
She's probably vegan too
Cone also did the fake throw motion that helped screw Stevie up.
Its a great move by Coner. Thats how I used to smoke fools in 7th grade flag football....
I think it was more like 35 yards, not 50. But still.
