Deadspin Article on ESPN: Don't Bother. [Ed-S: Moderated]

[Ed-S:

On Thursday Deadpsin posted an article of the kind that makes people with functional consciouses hate Deadspin. The article delves into the embarassing personal mistakes of some people whose only interaction with the public is to try to inform about sports. What you feel about the targets of this investigation is irrelevant; the purpose of the article is to cash in on the pain they can cause in their subjects' lives. It should not be read by anyone.

I consider spreading the link to such an article a gross lapse in moral judgment. As such the original poster of this thread (whose initial comments here were delited) will spend the rest of the offseason in Bolivia, and I will do the same to anyone else who demonstrates the same lapse.]

Yeah that was just about my outer bound for tangentially OT. The difference in the end was I understood the OP was the guy who made the film (I think -- like the email addresses match but that's all the research I did). Also I didn't think anyone could get hurt. It has nothing to do with why people come to this site, except it was a late night OT post and if that thing goes viral people on the board at least can be like "oh that's a guy from the board I visit all the time" and maybe feel a little better for being a total internet geek.

As to comparing this article to that, there's a MASSIVE difference. What put the gender communication video on edge is that it's just off topic. The measure of on-topic-ness of the Deadspin article isn't in question--news about the people who cover college football is on topic enough. What got this hammered was that it was highly unethical. You don't go around ruining peoples' personal lives for your own gain, and you don't assist others in doing that.

I'd have to agree with that assessment.  Yeah and maybe it's my own preferences, but I just don't even want to hear about this kind of stuff.  If the people mentioned in that article do those things, that's their own business.  If they don't and this is pure slander, it's even worse - as they're guilty by association.  No win for me.

This doesn't surprise me at all actually. Sports culture coupled with public popularity can put women in situations with people they feel they "know" or have seen because they were on television. Like Harold Reynolds "hugging" incident that got him booted from ESPN. You gotta think something else was happening to get fired at a company where the culture of womanizers is so common.

Correct.  I have seen some really bad topics get posted, and this one, which is also on other boards like 11w and deadspin gets bashed.  It is about sports and it is relevant to sports...esp considering  [Redacted] is involved...whatever

Just because it's about sports broadcasters doesn't mean that they're extra marital affairs are. There's no need for a sports TMZ here. The only reason that I would say Bobby Patrino should have been discussed is because it was the firing of a head coach. That's just my opinion though. I will agree with the board seems to be a little more dickish these days.

No one comes out looking god or even looking worth reading about in this story.  Deaspin looks like ghouls, the individuals involved look like fools, and the New York Post looks like a trash tabloid.  And all of this damage is self-inflicted over a series of events that had nothing whatsoever to do with sports.

I agree with the removal of the post and links.  Maybe Bolivia was a bit harsh, but I leave that judement to those qualified to make it.

Agree. Bolivia only lasts for the duration of this offseason, and I believe that is very light considering the potential for damage and the degree to which moderation was necessary (removing the names of the accused from everyone's posts as well as rewriting the post and the time I had to spend deliberating on the best way to handle the situation and be sure I was being just)

Hey, we're New Zealand up in here. We're kinda making it up as we go and focusing on how just the decision is, as measured by how well it serves the greater good while protecting the individual's rights. But yeah, the more work I have to do to undo something shitty someone does, the more likely I am to remove that person's ability to cause me future headaches.

Man.  First I miss TheGhostOfYost getting banhammered in the Fournette thread, and now I didn't even get to see who posted this before he got hammered.  If anyone wants to let me know who posted this, I'd appreciate it.

I think its fairly obvious from my huge neg score that it's me.  I apologize, but based on the prev threads about Petrino, I thought this would be in bounds.  I was wrong.  For the record, I was not saying that it was true, but simply that it was what was being said.  I googled the info after I read it and saw that other forum sites had posted about it as well.  My apologizes.  Also for the record, calling me a dick or coward or something along those lines is also not called for.  You don't know me, nor my intentions and namecalling on a foum is about as mature and uncowardly as driving to Niles, Michigan and telling me this to my face.

Apolgy accepted and appreciated, and I apologize too if I came off as making personal attacks. For the record I don't think you're a dick; I think you had a lapse in moral judgment and for that I stand by the sentence. I look forward to the season when your points return and this is all behind us. Way to man up and prove it was just a mistake by a good contributor.

For starters, I am a no kid.  Keep your assumptions on your own side.  Secondly, asking a question has nothing to do with crying...I don't care about points.  If I did, I would have posted more random stuff in the year plus I have been here since joining.  I read this blog for years.  If asking something is what you would consider an embarassement to myself, then that is your own opinion.  I'm done with this place now.

I may be in the minority but I actually enjoy his posts quite a bit even if he is weird as hell.  From reading below, it sounds like he said something very very naughty and may have gotten the boot.

Speaking of mgopoints, I start at the score of "2  Normal" automatically after every post I make.  Does that mean I posted something really good in the past to have this happen?  Serious question, I don't know how this works on here with that, but I do enjoy have that happen for the time-being.

That your karma was boosted to 2. (See your profile). It'll eventually run out, or you'll say something bad, and get down voted, and it'll go back to 1. Or say a lot of bad stuff and go down to zero.

Perhaps this thread should be deleted all together because the intrigue and contentiousness of it made me go to Deadspin to look up the article out of curiousity to see what the fuss was about.
