Cowherd on Michigan

Submitted by Knappster on

Crazy Cowherd just gave his opinion on Michigan.  Key Points...

  • Freshman and Sophmore's all over.
  • Win 7-8 this year
  • Super fast offense
  • Running RR out now would be stupid....he is going to succeed
  • Ripped on the old school fan thinking of him not being Bo/Big Ten football.
  • Next year sets up for possible Nat Championship run (Wisc and Iowa both lose QB's, and we have a nice schedule)
  • He talked about explosive teams (Florida, Oklahoma, USC, and mentioned UM as well.

Take it FWIW.

Sounds about right.  Nice to hear a national reporter talk about how dumb it would be to run RR out of town now that his system is starting to take hold.  Still think Cowherd talks out of his butt more times than not, but his college football knowledge is certainly respectable.  Still think 2011 MNC run is overly optimistic, but a BCS bowl run is certainly in the cards if the defense improves.

in the vocabulary of professional sports babblers, "speed" is synonymous with quality. nd's defense has suffered the last 3 years not from lack of speed, but from generally sucking at football and playing in a ridiculous defensive system. likely our best defensive player in 2009 - kyle mccarthy - was good not as a consequence of speed, but because he somehow seemed to know what he was doing and he could tackle.

nd's players don't show up at the combine, stand around and marvel at the speed the other dudes. they hold their own. we have as many recruiting stars and ridiculous fake 40 times on defense as anybody michigan will face this year. i'd be happy to take nd's top 4 linebackers in a 4x40 contest with the rest of the big ten. of the 8 or so linebackers who say meaningful minutes against purdue only one, carlo calabreese, is slow. the question is not speed, its whether they are any good at football. at this point, that's anybody's guess. the team tackled well against purdue and generally seemed in position and didn't seem to blow assignments. (caveat: i'm accustomed to tenuta-ball where every time a guy breaks the line of scrimmage he scores, so my eye might be a little maladjusted at this point)

i'm optimistic that nd defense's is headed in the right direction. after one game against a potentially mediocre offense, its hard to say where we are right now and its nearly impossible to guess how we'll fare against robinson. the only thing i know is that if robinson scorches our d, it won't be for lack of speed.

prediction: if nd's passing game scorches michigan's secondary, you'll find countless references amongst the sport chatterers to the lack of speed in michigan's secondary.

Does not seem like the kind of guy to make an emotional knee-jerk call to replace RR after this season, regardless of final record. Anybody can see this team's better days are well ahead of it, especially defensively. Defense will ultimately be the key, and the question remains whether RR can build a defense in the true Michigan/Big 10 tradition that can handle the Wisconsins and OSUs of the world in Oct/Nov.

A bit more patience, fans. The nifty card trick transition that RR was tasked to pull off was not, by any stretch of the imagination, an easy one. They are still largely very young and very inexperienced, but Rodriguez seems to be putting together a nice group of kids who want to play for him.

If u guys remember he spouted the same thing after our 4-0 start only to say after Ohio St. game that RR was not a good fit here.Although i hope he's right he will turn on UM at first chance.

If RR wins 7 games he will stay. People just want a winning season. People just want to see improvement.

It takes about 4 years to rebuild an entire program, its just hard to buy that much time.

As for Cowherd he was always a RichRod guy. I honestly have always liked him even when he bangs on Michigan. I think he say's some blunt truthful things that people don't like to hear.
