Common Man and The Torg

Submitted by 1464 on

A lot of people have posted wondering about the reliability of these guys when addressing the ongoing situation in Columbus.  I've been listening to these guys for probably 4 or so years now.  Lately, they've caught on and become pretty popular in central Ohio, and their schtick level is higher than it used to be, but they're still easily my favorite sports personalities, be it local or national.  They are obviously OSU biased, even though neither grew up in Ohio.  However, they routinely call a spade a spade, and are the first to criticize OSU athletes and the last to dismiss UofM athletes out of hand.  If you get past all the OSU love, which I have been subjected to for almost 6 years now, they're actually pretty hilarious at times, and usually spot on with their takes on situations.

I can't see them discussing this stuff on the air unless they honestly believe it to be true.  They may not vet their sources as well as a George Dohrmann type, but I'm sure some level of diligence was paid.  This is not to say that their sources aren't snowballing them, but I know enough background to comfortably say that these guys aren't making this stuff up.  I know this isn't breaking news or anything, but I thought I'd lend some background perspective on this OSU situation.

Any other Columbus people out there that have any take on this?

I'd appreciate some background on what these guys have been saying, just so I don't have to go back and try to figure out which previous thread it was discussed in.  Not to call you out or whatever, and I appreciate your insights, but I need some context.

Well...

They were kind of in the middle of this second wave of reporting about more possible sanctions.  To date, I think they have reported that TP got discounted rent, they're the ones who are saying that OSU players are still selling their gear.  One of them also insinuated that were told both OSU and Michigan may have some players selling gear to one of the "Rivalry shops" located in northern Ohio.

If I'm missing any other news they've tried to push out, please add on...

My understanding is that they have said on the air that OSU players are still selling autographs and the like. The radio personalities claim that they know who the "dealers" are. They have stated, again on the air, that if these dealers do not stop it, that they will reveal their names on the air.

The general premise is, that as OSU fans, they don't want to see people interact with the OSU players in such a way that ends up causing OSU any more problems than they aready have.

Keep in mind, I am reading this from far away, not listening to them on the air, so I could be way off base. Anyone with better information, please chime in . . .

These guys provide an entertaining sports dose for my drive home.  They've also got some Chicago background, so I've got some common ground with some of their rants (and they aren't all osu all the time).  And, as noted, they can provide some amount of critique of osu at times (and some appreciation for things from Michigan at times).  If one of them is out, their guests will tend to be osu football alumns (Krenzel, Carpenter) - Krenzel can be rational a fair amount of the time but Carpenter is worthless.

Just don't keep the radio tuned on past 6 pm unless you want your head to splode.  Neff is horrible.  And tonight Demetrius Stanley was filling in and essentially trying to incite a riot on Indy if the NCAA dares give osu a bowl ban for the current year.

I've live in ohio and the Common Man ond the Torg are by far my favorite. They are hilarious and criticize other osu fans especially the ones standing behind tress and still beleive that no wrong was done. They are more "down to earth" osu fans, and when they have an inside scoop they are vey credible. They know what they are talking about. (beside bashing michigan constantly, which i have called in a few times and tried to correct them but they never listen to me)

I think Torg is from Minny and Common Man is from Chicago. Like many Cols radio/TV personalities, they have adopted OSU teams as their "favorites". They seem pretty well informed on OSU issues but commonly lack knowledge of issues at Michigan. This comes across as a blind hatred for Michigan athletics (to appease their listeners) in the form of lazy, often incorrect jabs. I've emailed several times to correct some bullshit (most recently when the said K. Wormers transferred to OSU). That said, they can be very funny and are a staple of my afternoon drive time.
