COMMENTARY: OSU could face trouble against Hoke, Michigan

Submitted by The Barwis Effect on

One more article before I turn in for the night.  This one comes from Doug Harris of the Dayton Daily News:

I was talking before the football season to University of Dayton defensive coordinator Landon Fox, who once was a graduate assistant under Brady Hoke, about whether he felt the new Michigan head coach could flip the Ohio State rivalry in the Wolverines’ favor.

Fox had no doubts.

“He’s a great recruiter. And once you get players, the rest is easy,” he said.

I was skeptical then, but I’m not anymore after watching the Wolverines’ implausible win against Notre Dame last Saturday when they scored two touchdowns in the final 72 seconds.

Yes, they still have issues on defense, but that’s not likely to last. Hoke has assembled the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class for 2012, and I imagine the Wolverines have gotten a significant jump with juniors for 2013.

ESPN basically gave them a one-hour commercial after that prime-time game, frequently going back during “SportsCenter” for live look-ins. And announcers Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit  marveled at how the 114,000 fans wouldn’t leave.

Like many on this board, I no longer live in the mitten, but over here in ACC basketball world.  Football is big but basketball is king.  I wore my Michigan shirt on Sunday to the bar for the Lions game and I had at least 20 people come up to me and congratulate me / the team on the win and then want to have a conversation about Hoke or Robinson.  The "return to glory" story line is compelling on the national scene.

This, of course, is the same ESPN that produces College Gameday, aka the "Kirk Herbstreit Let's-Do-This-Thing-In-Columbus-So-I-Don't-Have-To-Travel-Plus-I-Can-Pimp-My-Family-On-The-Air-Or-At-Least-Before-I-Am-Run-Out-Of-Town" Show.

FACT:  The Ohio State Buckeyes have hosted College Gameday more than any other college campus, and the Buckeyes are second all-time in most Gameday appearances, home or away.  Let's see if the homerism continues now that Herbstreit was run off by the hooligans.

For the record, Michigan is actually tied with Alabama for third in hosting the show.  Since its part-time inception of road show broadcasting, Gameday has been in Ann Arbor only nine times.  Seems like more.

Also seems like a whole lot more in Columbus, if you ask me-- I was actually surprised the number wasn't much higher.

Ummm, Herbie has already moved out of town.  He doesn't live in C-Bus anymore.  Quite publicly he has made comments regarding the dregs of the fan base and that forced his move.

Furthermore, Herbie does a great job of not letting bias show.  He used to have a radio show where he let his anti-UM out; but on ESPN, Herbie plays it pretty straight.

The inside scoop regarding a lack of Gameday in A2 is cause of Corso, not Herbie.  Apparently, the last time Gameday was in town, the fans heckled the you know what out of Corso for catching the Ricks fumble.  Lee is still bitter about that after all these years.  I suppose I understand though, if he beats Michigan, he's a different coach.

Fowler?  Why?  Because of the hail mary?  That would indeed be stupid.   I know ESPN staff is a hotbed of plagiarists, criminals, drunks, and sexual harassers, but Folwer seems like an alright guy.  Is there any dirt on him?

Besides, and this boggles my mind living in Colorado now, that's a great campus -- I don't know why they don't have recruits banging down the doors to go there.  Lots of pretty girls (better than Ann Arbor), mild winters (milder than Ann Arbor), it's a good school even though the community doesn't support the university.

Herbie is alright on Gameday IMHO.  But Corso drives me almost as crazy as Holtz on that network.  Both overrated, both shameless homers, both way past their prime and relevance.
