Coach Meyer Sums It Up
There's an article in today's Chicago Sun-Times entitled; "Tide Rolling Saban's Second Time Around". It mentions that both Urban Meyer and Nick Saban had difficult first years but things have worked out pretty well since. According to the article, Saban lost his last four games last year and Meyer lost three SEC games in his first year. Obviously, both teams are playing for the SEC Championship this afternoon. In the article Meyer is quoted as saying: "Players need to get used to you. You need to get an understanding of the players. There are usually schematic changes that take a little while to get used to. Absolutely. That's the truth. That's real". I think that sums up the season for RR and staff and the team in general. I think we'll see a difference next year and a major leap forward in '10. It's obvious that the nay-sayers need to chill out some.

Jay is a dumbass. Les miles sucks, and he would have gone 2-10 this year at Michigan. Michigan's QBs were worse than junior varsity QB's in highschool. The O line couldn't block, and our secondary sucked worse than Jay does at staying positive. Me 1, Jay 0

i don't even get why your a fan of michigan. i mean, what is the point of being a fan of specific team when you are just so pessimistic about their chances and future? you rarely have anything good to say about the program. i just don't get it. yeah, obviously we had a bad year so should we assume that when we are doing well you will be the most supportive fan? Or is it safe to say that you will still be pessimistic of RR and his mysterious spread offense?

What's funny is that I've never said that I'm pining away for the day Les Miles returns to coach Michigan, or, that I think Rich Rod is a bad coach. I've explained my position more than a hanfull of times. I believe that Rich Rod is a very good football coach. I didn't think he was the best fit for Michigan. I believe that Miles or Schiano would've been better hires and would've succeeded here. While I think Rich Rod is a very good coach, I don't believe that he did a good job of coaching this football team this year. In fact, I think he and his staff did a shitty job this year of coaching this team. Does that mean I think he is doomed to fail at UM? Of course not. I've said before that he's proven to be more than capable at turning a program into a winner. However, I'm not convinced that he's going to do it at Michigan.
What I find absolutely fucking pathetic about some of you who criticize me for being negative about Rich Rod and the direction of the program is that I'll just about guarantee that you're the same people who had their pants around their ankles pleasuring themselves while thinking of the "greatness" of almighty Rich Rod and what he would do with all of the talent at his disposal at Michigan. You're the same people who thought Rich Rod would "outscheme" the opposition and that he does "more with less talent" than most other coaches. Well, things didn't work out the way some of you slappies and apologists expected, so, now Lloyd Carr has become a shitty recruiter, our players are horrible and, all of a sudden, we have no talent. Anyone and everything else is at fault for the terrible season but Rich Rod and his coaching staff. He holds little or no accountability in the eyes of some of you. I've admitted that, while I believe he did a shitty job as head coach this year, he is still a very good coach and can turn it around. I think that its perfectly fair of me to hold this view of Rich Rod. He can be both a very good coach, yet, still failed this year at coaching this football team. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
P.S. My "sig" line about Miles is a joke and nothing more. Before I had put it there a couple of months ago, I had a line about Nate Robertson being a terrible pitcher. I changed it to the Les Miles fake quote just for laughs. It has no meaning other than that of a joke.

While you (Jay) seem to be a "glass half empty" type of commenter, I still like to hear what you have to say (even though I tend to disagree most of the time). I'm sorry you don't think RR is the right guy to be at UM (but you have the right to express that opinion). It does seem like you are the voice of Doom & Gloom, though. That said, the rest of us should respect Jay's opinion and his right to express it here (some of the replies I've read are a little over the top - sheesh).
True, The Mighty Satan and Coach Cryer didn't go 3-9 in their first seasons. But, as mentioned above, the most important position on their respective offenses wasn't occupied by a redshirt freshman and/or a walk-on. My main point was to emphasize that it takes time for the staff to get used to the personnel and the players to get used to the system. I think that's something that has been mentioned on MGoBlog before. It was just nice to hear another head coach acknowledge it.
It was sure nice to see the Wolves take out Duke this afternoon. Now if the hockey team can play as well, it'll be a good weekend. =)

Thanks for at least getting where I'm coming from. I don't care whether or not anybody agrees with me, but, at least try to understand my position. Its quite immature and ridiculous to ask that I be banned (for what, I have idea) just because I hold an unpopular opinion regarding Rich Rod. Correct that. I would say its probably the minority opinion around here, but, a quite common opinion amongst a sizable portion of the UM fanbase.

Jay's opinion(s)are pretty tame compared to a lot of "fans" out there.
The confusing thing is that there are different opinions in the same post:

Good coaches do poor jobs sometimes. I would say that Lloyd didn't do a very good job his final season at UM, but, he was a pretty good coach overall. Just because I believe that Rich Rod did a bad job as Michigan's head coach this year doesn't mean he ISN'T a good coach. I think he is. Good coaches sometimes fail for a variety of reasons. As I said, though, I'm not convinced that he will turn it around here at Michigan.

Yeah, I would like some additional info as to why you don't think a coach, with a proven track record, will "pull it off" at UM. It surely can't be the competition because we see other versions of the spread (PSU, Perdunk, tOSU) having success. RR is responsible for getting athletes, that play well in his system, to UM. There is no GM that needs convincing. There are no players available via trade or free agency. I don't see how he CAN'T have success. It's all on him and his staff to get the kids here, coach 'em up and let 'em rip. He's done it before. Why will he fail now and why will he fail here?

jays right...just because someone criticizes rich doesnt mean they hate michigan football, or even rich for that mater. the bottom line is those that are honest with themselves would agree that rich did a pretty shitty job this year. that has nothing to do with his past success, or even his future success, it just means this year he underperformed. anyone at the start of the year that looked at this team and thought 3-9 would happen is clearly a moron.

You think Rodriguez did a shit job coaching this year. What did you think he did wrong? Be specific. What would you have done to make this season better. I'm not being an ass, I'm legitmately curious.
My position on this season is the same as Brian's: I don't know how much blame RR should get. I think the fact his best QB would be lucky to run the scout team in the Sun Belt Conference and his backup couldn't start on some good high school teams is a significant handicap.
