Who recruits DL for Central? Is he available?

What a DIALLObolical idea and opportunity!

I get that the transfer portal is a way of life these days, but it really does speak to the defensive recruiting failures that a program like Michigan is sorting through transfers from CMU and non-P5 schools as a means of fielding a capable d-like year 6 into our coach’s tenure.

Your point is well taken. To be fair....Mike Danna came from CMU and he's been an immediate contributor in the NFL for the Chiefs this year.
Also, this guy transferred to CMU from Texas A&M so he has some D-1 experience/exposure
December 22nd, 2020 at 3:23 PM ^
This guy doesn't have Danna's record of achievement. Danna was arguably the best D player in the MAC.
December 22nd, 2020 at 3:25 PM ^
For sure, and Diallo probably won't be Danna. But the point is that sometimes you can find valuable players from non P5 teams like CMU
December 22nd, 2020 at 2:59 PM ^
There are a number of big-time programs scouring smaller schools for these types of players. MAC schools just happen to be geographically adjacent to Michigan, so those are the kids most familiar with the area and the most relevant.
Oregon has been taking transfer QBs for a while and doing good things with them, Gardner Minshew was a standout at Washington State after playing for East Carolina, etc.
This is the way.

Yes, this is the norm. It certainly does speak poorly to Michigan’s recruiting, but only from a perspective of overall numbers at a position. Michigan’s deficiencies at DLine recruiting when need is staring them in the face is well documented. However, you shouldn’t pay much attention to where the kids are transferring from. As everyone on this blog is acutely aware, recruiting is not an exact science. Kids fall through the cracks, in reasonably large numbers, every year. That doesn’t mean they can’t play. I don’t care if they come from Alabama, Central Michigan or Charleston Southern for that matter. Find kids that have the ability to shore up a needed position group and get them.

Understood Magnus. In this brave new world where players get one transfer with immediate eligibility everyone will be raiding the rosters of everyone else. It's eat or be eaten. I would hope our recruiting department will have people focused on:
- Identifying non P5 players who have outperformed expectations formed they were in high school. In other words, former 2 and low 3 star recruits that wound up outside the P5.
- Scouring the lower P5 programs for recruits who have outperformed their rankings.
- Knowing every former 4 and 5 star recruit stuck behind someone else on their college team.
- Gathering intel on who is unhappy with their schools for reasons other than playing time
- Every former 4 and 5 star recruit from within 300 miles of Ann Arbor who went elsewhere and might want to be closer to home.
And once they know all this attack, attack, attack.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but a potential transfer still has to enter the portal before potential suitors are allowed to contact them.

You think "allowed " is going to stop Saban, Day or Dabo?
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:30 PM ^
Excellent point, however if we do not want to watch the same garbage we watched this year, we have to hit the portal for DT
December 23rd, 2020 at 1:38 AM ^
And for CB
December 22nd, 2020 at 2:58 PM ^
I’m good with them taking 2-3 of these guys if they can get them. DTs take time to develop and even if none of these guys are world beaters we need some bullets in the chamber
December 22nd, 2020 at 2:58 PM ^
Whatever it takes so we aren't putting another 250 pound converted Fullback there like we tried with Ben Mason last year
December 22nd, 2020 at 2:58 PM ^
Just asking the question:
Is there any concern with him around commitment to the team? This would be his 4th school (JUCO, Texas A&M, CMU).
I get it that he'd only be here for a year but something about that many moves doesn't sit right with me. It's probably my recruiting background and I just need to ignore that inclination.
I know DT is a desperate need, so it's certainly worth the risk but yea...don't love that many moves. Just sayin.
December 22nd, 2020 at 3:03 PM ^
I tried some light research to see why he moved around so much, but there isn't anything that goes into great detail.
I'm not sure why he went to JUCO out of high school in Canada, but he did. After that he had his pickings of D1 programs and chose A&M. He redshirted there and then played in 1 game total for A&M before transferring to CMU.
He was granted immediate eligibility for CMU and this was pre-covid so he must have had a good reason, maybe proximity to home??
Either way, I wouldn't be concerned about taking a flier on a 1-year player who has size and plays a position of need
December 22nd, 2020 at 3:07 PM ^
Appreciate the comment and I agree on the size and need at the position. It comes with some risk but I'm pretty sure the potential rewards outweigh the risk.

Whats the risk?
December 22nd, 2020 at 3:20 PM ^
It appears he was once committed to Oregon, too.
December 22nd, 2020 at 3:13 PM ^
I assumed "portal" came from the original meaning, a doorway or entrance.
BUT what if the NCAA isn't just a cluster of dopes but is secretly dope, and took it from the video game?
December 22nd, 2020 at 3:32 PM ^
It's the NCAA, far more likely they took it from the lol Portal by Facebook.
December 22nd, 2020 at 3:17 PM ^
Just amazes me how the fanbase had been openly screaming for DTs for years, and still nothing...and now it's as if the staff finally realizes only now, that playing small converted DE guys in the middle won't work...that...or they are going back to a traditional front and that Browns position less DL front is over.

Quick somebody call coach Harbaugh and let him know what the fans on MGoBlog are clamoring for!!
December 22nd, 2020 at 5:06 PM ^
Danna was an end, not a tackle, right?
