CMU DL (former A&M transfer) in portal

Mohamed Diallo hd 9.5 TFL, three sacks this year, 6’4”, 305.

Might be the Danna type they need.

I get that the transfer portal is a way of life these days, but it really does speak to the defensive recruiting failures that a program like Michigan is sorting through transfers from CMU and non-P5 schools as a means of fielding a capable d-like year 6 into our coach’s tenure.

There are a number of big-time programs scouring smaller schools for these types of players. MAC schools just happen to be geographically adjacent to Michigan, so those are the kids most familiar with the area and the most relevant.

Oregon has been taking transfer QBs for a while and doing good things with them, Gardner Minshew was a standout at Washington State after playing for East Carolina, etc.

This is the way.

Yes, this is the norm. It certainly does speak poorly to Michigan’s recruiting, but only from a perspective of overall numbers at a position. Michigan’s deficiencies at DLine recruiting when need is staring them in the face is well documented. However, you shouldn’t pay much attention to where the kids are transferring from. As everyone on this blog is acutely aware, recruiting is not an exact science. Kids fall through the cracks, in reasonably large numbers, every year. That doesn’t mean they can’t play. I don’t care if they come from Alabama, Central Michigan or Charleston Southern for that matter. Find kids that have the ability to shore up a needed position group and get them.

Understood Magnus. In this brave new world where players get one transfer with immediate eligibility everyone will be raiding the rosters of everyone else. It's eat or be eaten. I would hope our recruiting department will have people focused on:

  • Identifying non P5 players who have outperformed expectations formed they were in high school. In other words, former 2 and low 3 star recruits that wound up outside the P5.
  • Scouring the lower P5 programs for recruits who have outperformed their rankings.
  • Knowing every former 4 and 5 star recruit stuck behind someone else on their college team.
  • Gathering intel on who is unhappy with their schools for reasons other than playing time
  • Every former 4 and 5 star recruit from within 300 miles of Ann Arbor who went elsewhere and might want to be closer to home.

And once they know all this attack, attack, attack.

I’m good with them taking 2-3 of these guys if they can get them. DTs take time to develop and even if none of these guys are world beaters we need some bullets in the chamber

Just asking the question:

Is there any concern with him around commitment to the team? This would be his 4th school (JUCO, Texas A&M, CMU).

I get it that he'd only be here for a year but something about that many moves doesn't sit right with me. It's probably my recruiting background and I just need to ignore that inclination.

I know DT is a desperate need, so it's certainly worth the risk but yea...don't love that many moves. Just sayin.

I tried some light research to see why he moved around so much, but there isn't anything that goes into great detail.

I'm not sure why he went to JUCO out of high school in Canada, but he did. After that he had his pickings of D1 programs and chose A&M. He redshirted there and then played in 1 game total for A&M before transferring to CMU.

He was granted immediate eligibility for CMU and this was pre-covid so he must have had a good reason, maybe proximity to home??

Either way, I wouldn't be concerned about taking a flier on a 1-year player who has size and plays a position of need

I assumed "portal" came from the original meaning, a doorway or entrance.

BUT what if the NCAA isn't just a cluster of dopes but is secretly dope, and took it from the video game?

Just amazes me how the fanbase had been openly screaming for DTs for years, and still nothing...and now it's as if the staff finally realizes only now, that playing small converted DE guys in the middle won't work...that...or they are going back to a traditional front and that Browns position less DL front is over.
