Negotiations between SF and another NFL team are likely to very slow and complicated. An agreement must serve the interests of many different parties—including SF, one or more NFL teams, Harbaugh, and possibly also his assistant coaches, who Harbaugh might want to take with him to another team. Sometimes, even legal conflicts develop (like the past tampering accusations and court cases over coaches for the Jets and Pats).
So, what should UM do if asked to wait for the uncertainties to be resolved? UM could give Harbaugh a deadline, but then that might also become a de facto deadline for SF and Harbaugh’s NFL suitors, which could actually hasten their agreement.
A better solution might be for UM to have Harbaugh himself suggest a reasonable time period for his decision. If that works for UM, it would show Harbaugh that he has the control at UM, which he lacks in a frustratingly slow and contentious NFL. It could also enable UM to tell other coaching candidates when they could expect an offer. In addition, it could help current players and recruits cope with the current uncertainty.

Irregardless of what has transpired or what we want, If coach Harbaugh is headed this way, I hope it is because he sees this as personal crusade against what is frankly a state of being that is not just unhealthy for his alma mater, but something that viscerally impacts his personal sense of being. If his coming here is some kind of circumstantial escape. then give me someone else.
I bleed blue, and I love the idea of Harbaugh coming home, if he wants to. I don't want him escaping here, but sprinting here out of a sense of destiny or duty or some other higher purpose. One man's opinion...
