Carr, Moeller Named Honorary Captains for Army Game

Harbaugh said that Lloyd Carr, Gary Moeller and mega-donor Al Glick will be the honorary captains for the Army game. LINK.

It'll be nice to see Mo and Llo get some standing ovations that day.

To be fair, although it has been shuttered for about a decade now, my parents still talk about the lobster specials on weekends as well as the rather elaborate interior of the restaurant in its heyday. I only ate there once, only a couple years before it closed and well into its decline, and no, I did not see Coach Moeller.

Has Wolverine Devotee or anyone else ever posted a list of those people who've been honorary captains for Michigan football games?  Is such a list available online?

I'd replace Al Glick with Jerry Hanlon and Big Jon Falk.

No slight towards Glick, but it seems an odd mix with him on the field instead of someone with long-term football ties at team level.

These big time donors are pretty involved. Not in the daily running of the teams, but they tend to be around a lot - at least they are at my university, though I’m not sure how much the students see them.

Like I posted above, not at all meant as a slight against Al Glick.  But give him his own day.

I want actual football guys out there together, and nobody I can think of would be more deserving than Jerry Hanlon and Jon Falk.

Mike Gittleson. I know he's not revered around here, but he was in many ways the originator of a "Strength and Conditioning" coach (a term he and Bo created). He was a major reason for Michigan's growth under Bo and into Moeller and Carr. While his style was dated by the time he was replaced by Rich Rod, he deserves to be a Michigan legend in his own right.

My two cents

I actually think Moeller is somewhat overrated on here actually.  He had one 10 win season out of 5.  And are we really going to argue that Lloyd Carr, the defensive coordinator, had no hand in recruiting the guys that would become the heart of the great '97 defense?

I thought Coach Mo was a great Lions coach as well. He had a great interim season ruined by a long field goal in the last game of the season. Should have been given a chance rather than the garbage we suffered through. But being a Lions fan, he honestly would have been ruined by them.

Any honest assessment of Carr has to include that he left the program in disarray.  Kudos for 1997 and all his other contributions but the fact is he didn't care enough about Michigan to ensure that his final years and departure set the program up to succeed after he was gone.  Neg away!!

We beat OSU in 06 or not lose to App St the whole trajectory of the program changes.

Beating OSU pits us against Florida which, who knows (we beat a weaker Florida team with a weaker Michigan team the following year). Maybe Lloyd retires there on top. Or, if 06 plays out the same way and we beat App St, maybe lose a closer game to a good Oregon team and finish 10-3, that would be 11-2 followed by 10-3. There wouldn’t be a knee-jerk reaction to go the spread.

We could have seen English taken over in 2008. Or Les Miles most likely would have taken the job post NC winning and retiring Lloyd.
