Can Feagin throw?

Submitted by baleedat on

I know it's only the forth day of practice and I don’t have much to go by, but I’m starting to think Feagin can’t throw for shit.  Rivals claims he couldn’t throw a spiral the entire first practice (a spiral!).  Then in this clip of Wednesdays practice (at about the 2:35 min mark) he takes a snap, rolls right, looking real good…and just throws a complete duck.  In that same clip, during the entire post-practice interview with QB coach Rod Smith, while everyone else is heading in to hit the showers, you can see #3 in the background just throwing balls to an assistant (the guy in ref shirt, they're about 10-15 yards apart). And now that I think about it, in all the highlights I’ve seen of the kid (about 5 to 10 minutes worth) I’ve only seen him throw about 5 or 10 passes.  Maybe he’s a good passer and I just haven't seen it, or maybe there is a reason he got his third star when UM offered him.

The 2* guy from Florida that no other major program in the country wanted for QB can't throw real well? You mean all these guys don't turn into Pat White? Fuck man, I've been lied to. Should I burn my FEAGIN 4 HEISMAN shirt already?

I'll take that shirt off your hands and hang it next to my Navarre for Heisman shirt (I actually have one, wear it proudly, and heartily enjoy the laughs it gets from strangers)

A lot of times freshman struggle early in fall practice. They get nervous and are trying to learn a new system with new reads. A lot of times they rush their throws, and their mechanics go down the drain. I've seen QB's that come in that were supposed to be really good and struggle through August practice. By the end of August, they start throwing the ball better. I'm not saying he is going to be a great passer, but give the kid some time before passing judgment.

was uglier than anything I've ever seen thrown by a college quarterback. I will adjust my expectations accordingly (read: really low). Might as well just stick Carlos Brown back there if Feagin's throws will look like that.

The insanity surrounding this season is getting to me (and I'm sure I'm not the only one). Consider me ashamed to be freaking out over one (completed!) pass shown in one fall practice video, especially when we already knew we weren't bringing Feagin in for his arm.

I just want it to be August 30th already, so we at least have something that matters (besides recruiting) to freak out about.

Feagin was given a scholarship becaue he was the last dual-threat QB close to D-I caliber available.

In the span of like 9 days, we are going to go from "Feagin should start and will be the next Pat White" to "Feagin is a waste of a scholarship". I don't even have to change my expectations one bit (average, occasional playing time, non-factor at QB other than this year) and I'll move from disgusting pessimist to deranged optimist.

At least he completed the pass! Looked like a lot of balls that were thrown during the spring game. Give him time and he should be alright.

BTY - The pass is around the 2:40 mark. The one shown at the 3:40 mark you can't see the ball.

thrown a pass since last fall or spring and is a little rusty. Learning a new system might also cause him to be thinking too much. Remember he was rated as the top athlete in south Florida by the media. Being a 6' QB in the lowest division in the state is why he was ranked so low by the recruiting sites, imo.

To anyone who thinks he can't throw a spiral just go watch his film from last year. Give him time he'll be fine. Rare is the case when a freshman jumps in to start and does a good job. Henne, Bradford from OU, Navarre filling in for Henson etc. are the exceptions not the rule.

i have to admit after seeing Feagins highlights i had my hopes up (not way up, but up). but i guess Sheridan will be the #2 QB. i sure hope Threet isn't as fragile as he looks.

Feagin's pass at 2:40 looked a lot like Sheridan's work at the spring game except is was complete. He is probably pressing, trying to throw harder than his mechanics will allow, getting his hand too far behind the ball at release. If anyone was expecting him to look like Henne in his true freshman year, please dial your unrealistic expectations WAY back. All he was intended to be this year is a change of pace QB that will force defenses to scheme and practice to defend a running threat from the QB slot. Anything more is gravy. Also, was Bradford a true freshman or redshirt? That is what really impressed me about Henne's freshman year. from high school to 30 practices to starter opening day to Rose Bowl.

We've never seen Michigan players in an open practice before, so it's entirely possible that Chad Henne threw ducks during the weeks of his freshman year. This ability to see them practice is new, and not necessarily indicative of anything. And while you're busy trying to chill, please read this and see if you recognize any comments.

Darn, I just wrote a long comment but it didn't get posted, probably because I wasn't logged in. The biggest point was that I thought that Sheridan seems to have the prototypical throwing mechanics for this system. He keeps the ball high through his whole motion, so that little is wasted, his release is high, and the ball comes out quick. It's also a pretty accurate technique. So, I was impressed to see that. In contrast, Threet really seems to bring the ball low, down to his belt, during his windup. Lots of players do it, including some pros, but it wastes a good deal of motion and time. Some think it helps on the longer throws, but on the medium and short stuff, it can be slow and less accurate. He also seems to have a fairly low release point. All in all, I like Sheridan's ability to take coaching, at least.

Threet is less guru approved than Henne but had a year with Loefler and now has to learn an entirely new offense. So he'll be sub-freshman Henne with no running skills. Feagin is raaaaaaaaw. Cone sucks. That leaves Sheridan to do something unexpected.

Me, too, Colin. I like Sheridan as a week 1 starter. I doubt he has Threet's long ball - it doesn't seem that he has a cannon - but with decent mobility and a quick release, he could hold down the fort for a game or two, and maybe longer if he's got a longer arm than I've heard.

baleedat, sorry man, but i think you've firmly established yourself as mgoblog's resident bitch. first you make a positively moronic statement about will campbell earlier this week. then you judge an incoming freshman on a couple minutes of video you saw of one day of his first week of practice. next you say that threet looks fragile. huh? based on what? his whiteness? or the fact that he's like fucking 6-4 220 lbs? oh yeah, and you changed your font around 40 times in this thread alone. stop it. maybe it's time to change your profile picture because the stupidity seems to be rubbing off on you. newsflash to everyone who thought feagin was going to step in and be some kind of instant pat white. he won't. he's way too small, we have an inexperienced line, and he's just too raw to hold up during big ten play. newsflash to everyone who thinks he's a non factor based on his first week of practice. you're an idiot. that is all.

Tim Waymen

That wasn't cool or necessary.  Maybe his comment about the third star wasn't the best, but he was just commenting on what he saw in the video.  He didn't go, OMG we're fucked or say that he lacks top-end speed. We've seen much, much worse.

My opinion?  Yeah, I would love if Feagin could all of a sudden play like Vince Young, but this is where we are.  How he plays in 30 seconds of video means little, but he probably has work to do regardless, as is the case with just about any freshman QB who just stepped on campus.  My Pat White post was a joke.

os, i think you've established yourself as a queer. first you have a hissy fit everytime anybody offers the slightest bit of criticism about anything associated with Michigan football. i mean you're truly upset about something some guy posted on the internet about a game where kids run around with a ball. then, after you dry your tears, you "get back" at the guy who "wrote those hateful things about my team" by insulting him with a post of your own (maybe that was a bit hypocritical). then you get upset about font. newsflash to anyone who uses "newsflash" too much: you're a douche bag.

to defend myself...first of all, i said i didn't like campbell's attitude. is that so moronic? second, i'm not jumping to conclusions, and i'm not judging feagin by the first week of practice. i'm judging him by what the recruiting sites had to say about him, what RR has said about him, his hs highlights, and the fact that its been four days and he can't seem to throw a spiral. and yes, i think threet looks fragile. he looks skinny and he sat out a few practices last spring with a bruised thigh while he was fighting for the starting qb spot. i changed the font because i C&Ped something and it made the entire post to small to read.

take a couple deep breaths dude, its going to be all right. but you're a dumb dumb

I've sort of assumed the following career path for months for Feagin: 2008 - Plays approximately 1 drive per game as a "change of pace". Plays mediocrely. 2009-2011 - Vanishes into ether after bigger recruits arrive. So yeah, no shocks here.

Could be about right, ChiTown. I hope he'll turn into more, but it's hard for me to imagine him playing over Newsome once Newsome gets up to speed.

...he's not Drew Weatherford. Jesus, the kid is 18, practicing for like the 3rd time live at fucking Michigan. He might be a little bunched up. I'll reserve my judgement until he takes a snap in a game.

Justin Feagin already is the best running threat we've had at the QB position since 1989. I'm fine with not hyperventilating, letting him develop and see how it works out. I think he'll make some plays for us this year, but agree with those above who state he's just a stop gap until better QB fits come into the program. If Feagin is on the field during his upperclassmen years, it likely wont be at QB. My expectations of the QB position as a whole this year: That their combined play reminds me in no way of Rich Hewlett

jamiemac

August 7th, 2008 at 9:50 PM ^

Yes......because you're not much of a threat when you're on the sidelines. Believe me, I wish I could put Gonzales on the list. I was ready for his "era" at QB sometime during the middle of the first quarter of the '01 osu game.

Sigh

Anyway, sure its a litte hyperbole on my part. But, Feagin will see the field and have offensive packages designed to max out his skills. That we all seem sure of. That will make him the best legit running threat we've had at QB since Taylor. Early on at least, there will be no film or way to scout/prep for what that might be. I'll take that early advantage, trust RR will know how to exploit it and not pitch a fit that his spirals on August 7 aren't all that tight.

I was 2nd row in the student section for the 2001 OSU game.  I don't think Gonzalez was any better than Navarre.  I remember when Gonzalez got his chance in the game, his head turned to the side and then I saw him raise his leg signaling for the snap.  My brain instantly realized that it was about to hit the fan.  With Gonzalez's head still turned to the sideline the ball glanced over his head and behind him into the endzone - where Ohio State got a safety.  This inexplicable move by Gonzalez happened right before half time.

Considering that we lost by 6 points and after the safety we missed on a 2 point conversion...had  Gonzalez not given up a cheap safety we could have tied the game with a field goal when we got in range, but had to go for it on 4th down.  Never know though.

No disrespect towards Hewlett, but he kinda pioneered the whole Tacopants thing, at least as I see it.

Except instead of overshooting 8-foot tall imaginary beings, Hewlett's target were tiny tiny 1-foot creatures that could catch the ball off the turf.

Does Newsome redshirt or no? If Threet and some combination of Feagin and Sheridan are workable this year (not saying good, just workable to the point that you can see a decent future / glimmer of hope) would it be conceivable that Newsome sits one year and learns the system. Then comes back and competes full-on for the starting job as a RS freshman? My concern about counting on a true freshman as QB is that the likelihood of him being consistently productive and avoiding the huge mistake seem slim. This also saves a year of eligibility. thoughts? Colin, I think that you are dismissing Threet too quickly. the guy was a quality recruit with a decent set of skills for a drop back QB who is also pretty smart. Sheridan was a walk-on and I will assume he has a spot on the roster given his last name. I will be very surprised if Sheridan has much of a role during the season.

MGoObes

He's enrolling early in january (along with beaver) so he can compete for the starting job right away. The only way he redshirts is if Threet leads Michigan to a national championship this year.
